I’m a firm believer in seasonal listening…meaning certain music styles fit specific weather and calendar events. Seeing how Fall (Autumn for you uppity folk) skipped us here in the lovely Tennessee area for the month of October, you missed out on my recommendations for some decent and creepy Halloween tunes. However, if you’re interested, give Dead Man’s Bones a listen. It’s just one, self-titled album that provides the perfect combination of death, 50’s Doo-wop, and a children’s choir from none other than the legend himself Ryan Gosling (yes, that Ryan Gosling).
It’s Fall, the weather is cool but not sack-shrinking cold. You could probably do with a change of music to help with your mood in the crisp mornings, your commute to and from work, or late at night in the backyard fire pit. Let me assist by providing a few suggestions to spruce up your playlist:
Drive-By Truckers “First Air of Autumn”: This is one is pretty self-explanatory, so why not lead off with it? With a pleasant observation of the change in weather set to a medium paced tempo, these guys offer easy listening with a southern charm everyone can enjoy.

Trampled By Turtles “Whiskey”: This band seems to be one of the few that can actually provide tunes for every season. This specific song has the ability of portraying an upcoming Winter mentality while living in the Fall season. Mentions of ‘Scarlet Evenings’ and the longing of whiskey’s friendship paint the perfect image of Fall to me.

The National “Mr. November”: Another obvious choice based on the title, this song offers a slightly emotional tune that anyone can still get down to. I enjoy this one during an evening of reflection after a particularly challenging and shitty day.

Voxtrot “The Start of Something”: Not sure why, but this tune hits me as Fall. A little more upbeat than most in this article, these guys give a slight Vampire Weekend vibe that still breathes cool air.

Brand New “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows”: Really, this entire album could fit into Fall and Winter playlists, but we’ll stick with one of their best singles. A negative theme underlined with a promising tune, I give it three thumbs up.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth”: I put this on my Fall playlist well over a year ago because it just felt right. Now the local radio station is playing this jam, guess my hunch was right.
