Before I dig in, let me just say – this may be a problem with other fan bases as well. I wouldn’t know. I’m a fan of the Tennessee Titans. I’m in all of the fan groups on Facebook, so I see all of the ramblings surrounding this team and this team only. Sure, the girlfriend’s a Giants fan, but I’m not “in it” day in and day out, so to speak.
With that in mind, your boy needs to rant a bit. Titans Facebook can be a very supportive group. It’s nice to see what this team means to our community, and it’s nice to always have people available to talk Titans. They read my articles and actually engage in conversation over them. That’s nice.
But, more often than not, I’m seeing nothing more than straight insanity coming out of these groups.
People calling for jobs…”Mariota can’t stay healthy, we need a REAL franchise QB!” People calling for more Derrick Henry every damn week…”Henry needs more touches! Why you get a Heisman winner and he doesn’t get any carries? Murray is too old for this workload.” But, most frustrating is all of the free agent and/or trade talk.
I’ve heard Brandin Cooks mentioned more in the last week than I ever thought I would in my life. I’ve read posts and thought, “you can’t be serious” routinely. I thought I’d take a moment to get this off my chest and laugh at some of my favorites.
Victor Cruz – Yeah, the Titans need a receiver, but the Titans need a bona fide number one receiver -and/or- a speedster. Someone like Alshon Jeffery or Cooks makes perfect sense. The Titans -DO NOT- need Cruz and his busted ass knees. Maybe if the Titans could go back and retroactively compete for the 2011 Super Bowl, it’s a different story.
Adrian Peterson – Why? Just….why? Like, DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry aren’t good enough? We need Peterson! We need to pay $15M a year for ADRIAN PETERSON!
Alterraun Verner – Well, hell – he was a good as a Titan before…means he must be good as a Titan now, right?!?! No way Tampa Bay is letting him walk because he’s been a tremendous bust down there. I’m sure everything is just fine.
Colin Kaepernick – this one is easily my favorite. Kaepernick? Kaepernick. Of all the people, we’re going with this guy. Why? Well, because he’s a mobile quarterback like Marcus Mariota. He’s the perfect guy to serve backup! Plus, he’s BEEN TO A SUPER BOWL! *Gasp* I forgot that playing in a Super Bowl is a highly regarded characteristic of free agents. Like, “welp – he may not have the greatest talent, but the guy did play in a Super Bowl….guess that counts. Welcome aboard.”
Darrelle Revis – Again, why are we wanting busted ass players who exited their prime years ago? It’s just name recognition. That’s all. Revis had a terrible season and was routinely exposed.
DeMarcus Ware – Could he fill a need? Sure. But again, this is just name recognition. Pass rusher is actually further down the need list, and Ware is going to want decent money. It just doesn’t make sense for the Titans.
Credit where credit’s due – on to the ones that actually make sense:
Alshon Jeffery – Titans Facebook has been in on Jeffery for a while now, but they don’t always cite credible reasons for wanting him. True, Jeffery has number one receiver potential….he has not proven to be a number one receiver. Quit acting like signing Jeffery is like signing Calvin Johnson in his prime.
Dont’a Hightower – Cases for/against Hightower are the only Titans Facebook banter sessions I will pay attention to. There – I said it.
A.J. Bouye – This makes loads of sense, but I’m not giving you too much credit, Titans Facebook. I didn’t see anyone lobbying for Bouye before Paul Kuharsky started writing about him. Football guys understand Bouye’s talents. I’m not sure Titans Facebook even knew who he was.
I brought up Ted Ginn, Jr., wrote an entire piece on why the Titans should target him, and got shredded for it. NO HANDS. CAN’T CATCH. GARBAGE. I don’t get it – Ginn, who has had two tremendous seasons in a similar offense (Carolina) is GARBAGE, but you guys want Victor Cruz and Colin Kaepernick?
*sigh*
This was very cathartic. Thank you for bearing with me, readers, and remember: always be better.
