Man, Wrestlemania has passed. March Madness is over. MLB Opening Day was a few days ago. The Super Bowl has long since ended, and the College Football Playoff is but a distant memory. But, sports fans – rest easy. There’s always the good ol’ NBA to turn to.
Basketball season is….oh shit….wait….it’s already almost time for the NBA playoffs. WTF? Did I blink and miss the entire season? Damn, I have some catching up to do. What have I missed?
Shout out to those who read my NHL piece and recognize that as the same damn exact opener. You da real MVP.
1) The East still runs through Clevel….wait, what?!
You mean to tell me there’s a chance LeBron James doesn’t win an Eastern Conference title? No way. No way are the Boston Celtics actually that good. That’s Photoshop.
When did this happen? When did the Celtics catch up?
2) Russell Westbrook is the MVP, y’all – quit actin’ silly. Westbrook has carried a mediocre Thunder team and his stats have been mind boggling. 31.6 points per game. 10.4 assists per game. 10.7 rebounds per game. That is downright absurd, ludicrous even. He passes the eye test. He has the numbers. You probably can’t call the Thunder a legitimate contender, but they’re in the playoff hunt, so you never know. Westbrook has all of the ingredients of the MVP. So quit hatin’ on the guy. That’s all it is at this point.
3) I ended my grudge with Dirk Nowitzki – you can read why here. At the risk of sounding arrogant, this is probably the biggest news to come out of the NBA this season. At least, in my mind and opinion.
4) The Spurs are still boring as shit – again, I’m a greatness guy. So, this isn’t so much of a complaint as it is an observation. Gregg Popovich is an evil genius that has America convinced that what the Spurs do is ‘boring.’ But, I say, let the man be great. Let the team be great, and just enjoy the history of what this man has done and continues to do. At least Kawhi Leonard is getting some MVP buzz.
5) People got super pissed about teams resting stars – From a fan’s perspective, I totally get it. You pay your hard-earned money to go see a NBA game, you want to see the best players. From a coach’s perspective, it makes even more sense. Why would you risk injuring your best players in games that don’t matter? This is quite the mess to sort out.
6) Golden State is vulnerable…kind of? Maybe? Sure, they’ve won 12 in a row, but people keep talking about Steph Curry ‘having a down year.’ I don’t know – they’re going to clinch the best record in the West again, and probably coast through the playoffs until they meet the Spurs. Then, we’ll find out for real whether or not the Warriors aren’t what they’ve been in recent years.
7) Isaiah Thomas has emerged as an elite point guard – I know, I know. I just finished reaming the Celtics for being nobodies earlier. But, this is true. Seems like everywhere I click, I see something about Thomas and how the C’s are back thanks to him. Cool, I guess. Maybe I should check this guy out? I don’t know – I’m just now tuning in to the season.
8) Giannis Antetokounmpo has the best name in the NBA – and he has the Milwaukee Bucks competing in the East, which we’ve established is no longer basically the LeBron James Conference. Say it with me: YAH-NIS AN-TE-TOE-KOOHMP-OH. Literally over here just repeating this aloud. Hall of Fame type name.
9) Devin Booker scored 70 points in a game – seems pretty cool. Is he in the NBA now, though? Or, was this during Kentucky’s run in the NCAA tournament? I’m very out of the loop. Forgive me. Oh, he plays for Phoenix now. I’m happy the Suns are still a thing – they were my team as a kid thanks to Charles Barkley.
10) The Hornets reside in Charlotte again – when did this happen? I wasn’t even aware they even had a team. Are they any good? I could look this up, but shit – I don’t do any actual research here.
I guess I need to watch more basketball. Can’t wait for the playoffs!
