I don’t like to brag that often, but it’s worth noting that I do consider myself an amateur scientist. I’ve been saying for years that the more beer you drink, the less you feel. This is definitely one of Newton’s Laws if I’m not mistaken. Well, what Newton and I were saying 2,000 years ago when he first wrote down his laws, the rest of the scientific world is catching up on.
Researchers at Greenwich University in the U.K. say they discovered strong evidence that alcohol is an effective painkiller. They also concluded the more beer people drank, the less pain they felt.
“It can be compared to opioid drugs such as codeine and the effect is more powerful than paracetamol (generic Tylenol),” said Trevor Thompson an author of the study published in The Journal of Pain.
The study compared 18 different controlled experiments that involved 404 people. They found that a blood alcohol content of .08, about three or four regular drinks, can reduce pain by up to 25 percent. It also increased pain tolerance a little.
This would explain why so many people who have chronic pain self-medicate with alcohol, Thompson said.
Well, no shit, science! I could’ve told you 50 years ago that there was a direct correlation between the amount of pain you feel and the amount of beer you drink. Drink one beer and I can feel a pinch. Drink a case of beer and I can’t feel the fact that I am laying in the middle of a bonfire. That’s just how it works.
But don’t think every day is suddenly Oktoberfest.
He stressed that long-term use alcohol as an analgesic causes more harm than good.
One of the potential side effects includes spending your entire life savings and having your family dessert you. I don’t find this humorous, I just don’t think this report did a good job of hammering home just how bad too much beer can do. That’s all.
