Nashville Power Rankings: Week 6

Nashville – we’re back for Week 6 of the SoBros Network’s Nashville Power Rankings. As journalists, we have the story of a city to tell, and we’re hammering it out one week at a time.

I won’t lie – it’s been kind of a boring week. Not a lot going on in the sports world, a lot of friends and family seem to be out of town on vacation. All the while, we’re just humming right along like the Cumberland after a hard rain.

Oh, and, don’t forget – tomorrow (June 24), feel free to come hang out with your favorite SoBros writers at Buffalo’s Billiards at 5PM. We’re celebrating my birthday. Let’s drink beers, play shuffleboard/foosball, and sit on comfortable ass couches.

If you have a submission for this column, feel free to DM us on Facebook or Twitter, or shoot us an e-mail at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com because we’re still too cheap to pay for e-mail hosting.

The Week in Review

Story of the Week: James Neal is gone. Nah, he’s not like “missing” or anything…maybe I should’ve phrased that better. He’s okay…safe and sound to the best of my knowledge. But, he was selected during Wednesday night’s NHL Expansion Draft. Indeed, “the Real Deal” (fucking awful nickname – who started calling him that? This is like a 1920s baseball nickname) is headed to Vegas to join the Golden Knights.

We’re all sad pandas about this. It’s been all the Nashville sports community has been talking about this week, except for the Vanderbilt rape trial, which is far too serious, depressing, and disgusting for this site.

Blue Collar Badass of the Week: Patrick Hale. So, the Nashville Power Rankings were already written last week when this story came out, but it’s so amazing, Mr. Hale had to get a mention. He’s the guy credited with stopping two murderous fugitives in Christiana last week. Check out the full story in The Tennessean.

Shoutout: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Yes, they are indeed still doing music. The headlines are going to promote Chris Young playing Nashville’s fan-fuckin’-tastic 4th of July party, but I see you, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band…still getting on the bill for the big shows despite being around since approximately the Civil War.

Honorary Nashvillian of the Week: Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Yeah! Apparently, this is still a show that comes on television. Learn something new every day. If you’re reading this in time, you can still get out to the Cane Ridge Event Center to audition. A million dollars is still a million dollars, regardless of whether or not the contest peaked 15 years ago….sorry…that’s a bit of an elbow drop on WWTBAM, but that’s what I do here.

Step Your Game Up

Adidas – seriously, not a fan of the new Preds jerseys (they’re called sweaters, actually – I’m such a smart hockey fan). It’s like Adidas said, “let’s give ’em all the yellow we have!” I think they’re far too simple…far too plain. But, this is coming from a guy who actually liked all the piping on the Reebok jerseys.

Tropical Storm Cindy – Cindy is a real bitch – coming along the first week of Summer and really putting a damper on all of the activities. I can try and sound like a professional writer for a moment, or I can just hand it over to Nashville’s favorite weatherman, Paul Heggen, for a much more professional rundown.

Whoever dumped chicken shit all over the road – Seriously, this was a thing that happened this week:

And, here’s your weekly reminder to #BeBetter!

On to the Rankings

5. Chris Stapleton – An old favorite of this site (and 2015’s SoBro of the Year – I’m sure he’s proud), Stapleton announced this week that he was BACK, baby!

Courtesy of The Tennessean:

Following a three-week hiatus from touring, Stapleton revealed on social media Wednesday night that he was on his way to Oklahoma where the splint was coming off his injured finger, and he was headed back to the stage.

Happy to see the man playing tunes again.

4. Metro PD – Some of you may remember me talking about falling victim to the fraudsters out there in the very first edition of this column. Long story short, someone stole money from me. Well, the fine folks at the Nashville Metro Police Department are putting in work, trying to educate the community – courtesy of WKRN:

Detectives from the fraud division meet with community groups, homeowner associations and professional organizations to discuss current scams. They will also talk to the groups about how to report fraud if they fall victim.

Good on you, Metro PD.

3. Jon Burton Gotta give credit where credit is due – Jon Burton stepped up and joined the Wake Up Zone on 104.5 The Zone this week and absolutely killed it. Hope we get more of him in the future. Admittedly, I’m always in and out of The Wake Up Zone, so if they announced this is a permanent thing, I missed it. Oops – how’s that for journalistic integrity? Anyway, good work, Jon.

2. David Poile – General Manager of the Year! After years and years of hard work in Nashville, the Preds GM finally took home the hardware. You done did Smashville proud.

1. Nashville Public Library – You knew it was going to have to take something spectacular to knock David Poile out of the top spot, and whoa! The library announced this week that they will no longer be charging people late fees! Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Courtesy of WSMV:

Beginning July 5, the library is eliminating late fees for good.

The library will also erase all overdue fines that any patrons currently owe.

The library has been taking in about $150,000 annually in those late fees, but Waltenbaugh said it’s not worth it.

“In the scope of Metro’s overall billion-dollar budget, it’s less than one percent of the revenue they collect,” she said. “Anything that gets our material in the hands of more people is a good thing in our eyes.”

Go read books, motherfuckers.

’til next week, you stay classy, Nashville!
