First of all, this is probably the most Paul Finebaum content we’ve put out in a given week. But, it’s been a noteworthy week. We had to write about his signing a dude’s forehead in Alabama, and I need to share his sentiment regarding Butch Jones with our readers. A strong contingency of them are fans of the Tennessee Volunteers, and I want to see if any of them are willing to step up and defend Jones’ comments.
Courtesy of Saturday Down South:
“I don’t view it as a disappointment,” Jones said Monday. “The way I view it is we didn’t accomplish everything we set ourselves out to. And, again, our goal every year is to win a championship and compete to win a championship.
“So, was it a disappointment? No. Did we not accomplish some of the things we set out to do? Absolutely. We have to learn from the things that went wrong that we could have done better.”
Saturday Down South is a nice, credible web site. Jon Cooper is a tremendous writer with a bright future ahead of him. We are neither of those things. So, I’m confident when I say this: that’s the most bitch ass bunch of bullshit I may have ever read come from the mouth of a head coach. Again, we’re a comedy blog, so I can say that and it technically counts as journalism. Anyway, Coach Jones needs to own his shit. Last season was ABSOLUTELY a disappointment. The Vols had preseason expectations of a Top 10 finish and contending for a SEC Championship. They were supposed to win the SEC East at least. But, none of that happened. So, yeah – it was a total disappointment.
“[Fans have] very mixed reaction [to Butch Jones],” Finebaum said. “I know one thing, Butch Jones is very likely to survive this season, short of a disaster. But how does this season play out? He’s done a really good job lowering expectations, which I think is what he wants to do.
“What frustrated me on Monday is this: ‘We inherited a very difficult situation. We inherited a program that was 2-14 against Power 5.’ That’s ridiculous. In your fifth year, you shouldn’t be talking about your first year. You shouldn’t be going through a transition. Alabama isn’t the example everyone wants to hear, but Nick Saban, after five years, had won a national championship and was about to win another one.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself. There was absolutely no reason, with all the talent on the roster, for that 2016 team to finish the way it did. Honestly, to me, that’s a hallmark of bad coaching. Jones has had an adequate chance to build a winning program, and just when we think the program is heading in the right direction, they blow it.
Jones addressed the criticism by telling ESPN that:
“Paul hasn’t played one snap of football for the University of Tennessee. Our expectations are to win championships. That’s the next evolution of our football program. … He gets paid to make those comments and I respect that.”
MORE. BULLSHIT. I stand with Paul. I wonder what my Vol fan friends have to say about all this? Load up those comments.
