Could Star Wars Grow Stale?

News of there being trouble in paradise concerning the new Star Wars spin-off Han Solo movie isn’t as troubling for me as it may be for others. My worry is much bigger than that. Star Wars may be approaching unheard-of territory where it will wear out its welcome.

I am in no way, shape, or form a diehard Star Wars fan, but I know it’s a special thing when it comes to the movies. It remains a cinematic spectacle, doing the whole “universe” thing way before Marvel even thought about it. Our pop culture is smothered in it and has been for decades. The anticipation for each episode can barely be contained. We all know how the original three films changed the face of film forever. Even when Episodes I-III were released, there was pandemonium, until after people watched them, and the shit talking hasn’t stopped since.

I mean how can so many have so much unfiltered hatred towards that goofy ass Gungan Jar Jar Binks?

On December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens reignited the worldwide affection for the space saga. It was A New Hope for a new age. Whether you’ve seen one episode or all of them, it was a big fucking deal. But, we also waited ten years for Episode VII. At the end of this year, we will be getting Star Wars: The Last Jedi and in 2019, Star Wars: Episode IX. Besides the main episodic stories, there was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that hit around the end of last year as well. The mentioned standalone Han Solo movie is coming out next year. And, don’t forget about that rumored Boba Fett movie that may be headed our way as well. Hell, how about a movie where Jabba the Hutt is 15 years old and 170 pounds?

My point is we may never have to wait again for Star Wars. You may not believe this, but too much of anything is bad. Luckily, quality hasn’t taken a backseat to quantity.

Yet.

Still, where’s the specialty of it all if you know you’ll keep getting it? Essentially, that is what Star Wars has in mind for the next few years at least. And there’s probably more where that came from considering where the franchise sits on the list of domestic all-time highest grossing movies:

 1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens– Over $930 million
7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story– Over $532 million
10. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace– Over $470 million
11. Star Wars: A New Hope– Over $460 million

And that’s just here in America!

Having Luke Skywalker back and this being Princess Leia’s final bow, the sky is the limit for what Star Wars: The Last Jedi will bring home. Can it pass The Force Awakens? We will find out soon enough.

Clearly, the more cash they take, the more movies they’ll make. The cracks could be beginning to show with the ongoing issues of the Han Solo movie, though. They could be biting off more than they can chew, and Star Wars won’t taste good if it’s being crammed down our throats.

Star Wars is a phenomenon that will always put asses in seats. That’s a given. But when a galaxy far, far away doesn’t seem too distant, it becomes normal. And that’s the last thing any of us want Star Wars to become.
