Well, shit – we’re a bunch of football writers, so I guess we have to get in on the ‘NFL Power Rankings’ action. So, here we are. Your boy “Big Natural” is a major advocate of the Bill Parcells school of thinking in that ‘you are what your record says you are.’
With that in mind, my power rankings are going to be based on the body of work. I don’t care what you were supposed to do before the season started. Nor do I care what you could do in a potential matchup. I’m placing an emphasis on what teams have actually done.
NFL POWER RANKINGS: WEEK 2
1. Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) – The Chiefs continue to absolutely roll on offense. Kareem Hunt is running away with ‘Rookie of the Year’ honors, and Alex Smith is looking like an elite NFL quarterback. They are the most complete team in the NFL.
2. Atlanta Falcons (3-0) – The only other team in the NFL that remains undefeated, the Falcons have had two straight quality wins over NFC North contenders Detroit and Green Bay. Plus, Chicago isn’t looking too shabby either. The Falcons are the clear class of the NFC.
3. New England Patriots (2-1) – The Patriots are clearly struggling on defense, but as long as Tom Brady is playing, they’re going to be thinking Super Bowl. I don’t care if it was against the Texans, that comeback on Sunday was gutsy.
4. Green Bay Packers (2-1) – I don’t care if it was Cincinnati, that was a big comeback on Sunday. Again, as long as Aaron Rodgers is standing, the Packers have a chance. They benefit from the rest of the NFC failing
5. Oakland Raiders (2-1) – Derek Carr and the Raiders offense had an awful night against the Redskins, but that doesn’t cause them to slide too far. I’m still buying them as one of the AFC’s elite.
6. Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) – That was a hard fought win against a New York Giants team that was desperate on Sunday. The Eagles continue to surprise, but this week, I’m going all in on the Wentz Wagon.
7. Tennessee Titans (2-1) – Yep, the biggest jump this week goes to the Titans. After two consecutive wins against quality defenses, I’m ready to say they’re for real. Looking around the AFC, this team could really make some noise this year.
8. Detroit Lions (2-1) – The Lions came incredibly close to beating the Falcons, and it came down to the final eight seconds before they were officially out. I’m not too concerned about that kind of loss. They’re going to be just fine with Matthew Stafford and that defense.
9. Denver Broncos (2-1) – Looks like I bought in on the Broncos too early, but I still think they’re going to be good behind that defense. Buffalo is better than people realize, so I’m not counting that loss against them too much. They should bounce back.
10. Washington Redskins (2-1) – The ‘Skins have rebounded nicely after opening the season in a loss to the Eagles. The Rams look like a good team. I’m obviously high on the Raiders. Those are two quality wins. We all figured Kirk Cousins would be good, but that defense was surprisingly dominant against the Raiders, and Chris Thompson looks like the answer in the backfield.
11. Dallas Cowboys (2-1) – I’m not ready to forgive the Cowboys for that terrible loss to the Broncos…I mean, they looked bad. But, they were able to right the ship against the Cardinals and get an impressive win. The NFC East is starting to look as competitive as it was in the mid-2000s.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) – You are what your record says you are, right? The Steelers have an impressive win over Minnesota, but outside of that, they just haven’t looked very good. I don’t feel comfortable naming them a top 10 team.
13. Minnesota Vikings (2-1) – That Vikings defense certainly looks for real, but I’m still concerned about the consistency of the offense without Sam Bradford. That’s a tough division, too, with the Packers and Lions to contend with.
14. Los Angeles Rams (2-1) – Alright, here we go. I’m gonna do this – it’s time to buy in on the Rams. Aaron Donald is a grown ass man, but who would have seen this Rams offense coming? They could benefit from a weak NFC West.
15. Buffalo Bills (2-1) – The Bills could be a sneaky team in the AFC. They certainly have the defense to do it, and if Tyrod Taylor plays well, he provides a dynamic element to that offense.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1)
17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1)
18. Baltimore Ravens (2-1)
19. Carolina Panthers (2-1)
20. Houston Texans (1-2)
21. Seattle Seahawks (1-2)
22. Miami Dolphins (1-1)
23. Arizona Cardinals (1-1)
24. Chicago Bears (1-2)
25. New Orleans Saints (1-2)
26. New York Giants (0-3)
27. Indianapolis Colts (1-2)
28. San Francisco 49ers (0-3)
29. New York Jets (1-2)
30. Los Angeles Chargers (0-3)
31. Cleveland Browns (0-3)
32. Cincinnati Bengals (0-3)
