Heisman Watch: Week 6

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2017 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 6

5. Louisville QB, Lamar Jackson – Three total touchdowns and 354 yards passing keep Jackson in the hunt. This dude is a human highlight reel, but as the Cardinals continue to lose games, you have to wonder if he’ll remain one of the top Heisman contenders.

4. Oklahoma QB, Baker Mayfield – That Iowa State loss was bad, but credit to Mayfield. He was still able to put some solid numbers on the board. The question is how much the voters are going weigh this loss come season’s end.

3. Stanford RB, Bryce Love – Through just six games, Love has 1,240 freaking rushing yards. Yes, on 118 carries, that’s an average of 10.5 yards per carry with half a season’s worth of work. Amazing.

2. Penn State RB, Saquon Barkley – Sure, he tacked on two more touchdowns to his season total, but the yardage wasn’t there this week. Barkley failed to top 100 total yards. What makes it worse is that Penn State dominated Northwestern….this was the second consecutive week where Barkley seemed to be held back a bit. Maybe we’re starting to see him come back down to Earth a bit.

1. Washington State QB, Luke Falk – Come on, people – how can we ignore Falk any longer? The guy has completed 71.8% of his passes for 2,000 yards. His 19 touchdowns are the best in college football, and with only two interceptions on the year, he’s second only to Mayfield in fewest interceptions thrown among major Heisman contenders. The Cougars have a signature win over a top-five USC. This kid has everything it takes to win the Heisman so far. I’m willing to give him the points that come with a #1 ranking this week.

Dropped from Rankings: Easy enough this week, folks. Not a lot of shakeup in the top five, and since Oklahoma State didn’t play, Mason Rudolph doesn’t get points.
