Nashville’s Favorite Weatherman, Paul Heggen, Is Leaving Nashville for Raleigh

Well, the cat’s out of the bagel now, isn’t it? After months of speculation, Paul Heggen has confirmed that he is leaving Nashville’s WSMV. He’s taking a gig in Raleigh, North Carolina….which…yeah…isn’t Nashville. Wow. Let that sink in for a minute. I imagine there are a lot of people out there waking up to this news this morning who aren’t going to take it very well. Paul’s a popular guy in this market, but for good reason.

I don’t know directly who is to blame for this, but obviously we’re going to roll with WSMV. Things haven’t been the same since they kicked him off the morning show. Despite the repeated efforts of many a Nashvillian, we simply could not change the minds of the people who make these decisions.

So, here we are. The city of Nashville has to pay with the loss of our favorite weatherman, SoBro of the Year nominee, and third best local Twitter account to follow. I should clarify that he did not die – he’s just moving. I think I phrased that a little irresponsibly. But, how did we get here? For what? Money? Pride? Shits and giggles? Who knows? I don’t work for WSMV. I would think they would actually listen to their viewers, but they’ve proven, at least in this regard, that they don’t give a single shit about us.

Nevertheless, I don’t want to dwell on the negatives here. Folks, we fought our fight, and we fought it well. But, there’s nothing more we can do. I guess this is where we cue up the sad music and roll Paul Heggen’s Greatest Hits…maybe hit play on this and ride this piece out:

Personally, when it comes to ‘Paul Heggen’s Greatest Hits,’ I don’t think it gets much better than this:

To which I replied:

Sorry, Clay – you may have been the first person to ever pay me to write, but Paul Heggen murdered you on Twitter. The comeback was weak. Total scorched Earth reaction, and Heggen owned you from bell to bell. More on that fateful day here courtesy of Awful Announcing.

Anyway, we wrote this dumbass blog back in May, and because Heggen was nice enough to share it on his Facebook and Twitter accounts, our traffic BLEW UP. So, yeah – the guy’s been great to us. I’ve written plenty more about that in other pieces. But, in gathering e-mails and stories for this piece, we read some really cool stories about Paul’s impact on WSMV’s viewers. I was amazed to hear how many people had been personally e-mailed by Paul, for various reasons – sometimes, just a simple ‘thanks for watching.’ That stuff goes a long way with us common folk.

So, obviously, this is a huge blow to the community. I think we hit the nail on the head with our official case study on why Heggen is so popular (spoiler alert: it’s sex appeal), but this move is going to put immense pressure on Chris Miller to step up and be the next great “cool guy” on WSMV mornings. He seems nice enough to do it. And, while he’s no Heggen, he has just enough of a handsome factor to get the job done. I wish him nothing but the best. But, I’ve officially made the switch to WKRN since Heggen was relegated to weekends, and won’t be able to watch. I’ll just have to blindly cheer him on – which is kind of a weird thing to do every morning, but fuck it – he seems cool.

So, thanks, Paul – for all you’ve done for us and for all you’ve done for Nashville.  If you ever find your way back here, there’s a team of degenerate bloggers who are always willing to crush beers.

And, rest assured, no one will ever slander the great name of Paul Heggen in our company without taking a huge wad of spit to the eyes. We will proudly carry the flag for the Heggen brand as long as we’re running the company in Nashville. Lastly, I still want to get a special instacast up on the SoBros Network Instagram at some point.
