FACT: Goldberg’s Spear Was the Best Spear

The Spear is one of the most popular finishing moves in WWE history. But, several wrestlers performed the move, especially since the move’s rise to popularity during Goldberg’s initial WCW run. A couple weeks ago, WWE put together a nice little tribute on their Instagram account, reliving some of Goldberg’s best Spears. It reminded me of the glory days of the move, so I had to share it with you guys:

20 YEARS of @goldberg95 = 20 YEARS of SPEARS!

I don’t think there should really be any sort of debate: Goldberg’s Spear is far and away the best Spear in wrestling history. The Spear to Matt Hardy featured here is exactly what the Spear should look like. I mean, it looks like a tractor just ran over Hardy. Just forcibly bowled over and he’s out cold. Something about the way Goldberg executed the move made it seem like his opponents were literally being folded in half. Hell, maybe he was just really burying people. It looks real.

That Spear on poor Charles Robinson, Little Naitch, I’ll be damned. I don’t know how he lived. How is he able to walk right after that? Also, gotta love actual Naitch just selling it like he was dead. Like, Goldberg literally knocked him into the afterlife.

Goldberg’s build was part of what made it so impactful, unlike when Edge did it. The biggest distinguisher in Goldberg’s Spear is that he actually doesn’t leave his feet when he does it the way Roman Reigns does. You jump, and it slows your momentum, taking away some of the explosion of the move. The way Goldberg executed the move, it was like he was running through you…not to you.

Batista had a pretty decent Spear, but at times, he sort of pulled up into a Spine buster. He was also guilty of running to opponents at times, too. But, like Goldberg, he had the build to really pull it off. The only guy who has ever come close to as impressive a Spear was Rhyno. But, he’s….well, he’s Rhyno. He’s built like a brick shit house…so, of course, his Spear (err….Gore) is going to look good. That Gore he delivered to Chris Jericho through the Smackdown set was iconic. But, long wet hair and a women’s bathing suit-esque singlet don’t equate to Goldberg’s bald lean build. So, ultimately, Goldberg gets the nod, and I don’t think there’s even an argument against that.

So, let’s recap the official SoBros Spear Power Rankings, and let me know if I’ve forgotten anyone:

  1. Goldberg
  2. Rhyno
  3. Batista
  4. Edge
  5. Roman Reigns
