Jimbo Fisher Could End up at Texas A&M, but He Doesn’t Want to Talk About It

Texas A&M fired head coach Kevin Sumlin. We figured he was on the hot seat back in the offseason, but after an opening weekend loss to a UCLA team that turned out to be pretty mediocre, the writing was on the wall. It was going to be hard for Sumlin to survive the season. After the Aggies finished 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the SEC, they severed ties with Sumlin. Now, the rumors of Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher heading to College Station are heating up.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has linked to the Texas A&M head coaching job for a month now.

Fisher has repeatedly said that he would not comment on other job openings, but rumors have started to fly out of Texas that Fisher has a “handshake agreement” with the Aggies to become their next head coach.

Fisher has declined to talk about job openings every time it has been brought up to him this year.

The latest was on the Jeff Cameron Show on Monday morning when Cameron asked Fisher if he had accepted the job.

“I never comment on jobs,” Fisher said.

I actually love this approach. The guy’s not going to be labeled a liar if/when he does end up at Texas A&M. But, he’s also not firmly committing to staying at Florida State past 2017. Fisher has been known to do this in the past, too, using the open LSU job as leverage to get more moolah from the Seminoles.

There’s something about the man I just don’t like. Quite frankly, I can’t put my finger on it. He’s a hell of a recruiter. But, I don’t know how great of an actual coach he is. His 2013 National Championship was certainly aided by the Heisman winning Jameis Winston and fellow first round draft pick, Kelvin Benjamin. They made the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014, but had their buttholes wallered out by Oregon.

Something about him just seems slimy. It’s hard for me to see the motivation to leave Florida State unless he’s just ready for a new challenge. Maybe he is just trying to get more money, but it seems that would grow old in a hurry with the institution he’s at.

As for his fit at A&M….hell, it couldn’t be much worse than 5th in the SEC West with Fisher at the helm. Why not give it a shot? Regardless, some middling program is going to get a fine head coach in Sumlin. He just wasn’t good enough to get the Aggies to the mountaintop.
