The Tennessee Titans will introduce former Texans defensive coordinator and Patriots great, Mike Vrabel, as the new head coach in Nashville later today. Rumors are swirling now that one of Vrabel’s first hire could be his offensive coordinator, and it could be current Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day.
New Titans’ HC Mike Vrabel’s offensive coordinator hire is significant, and….Ohio St. co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day is considering becoming the Titans’ OC, according to league sources.

On the surface, you guys might be like, “who?!”
But, the more you look into this cat, the more it sounds like a great fit with the Titans. Plus, it’s new blood. One of the things we talk about as Titans fans is getting some new ideas into the organization. It’s felt like we’ve played “run the ball and play defense” football for as long as the team’s been in Nashville….call it Fisherball. Call it exotic smash mouth. It doesn’t matter. It’s all been some variation of the same.
So, yeah – Vrabel might not have the most experience, but it’s a refreshing hire. If he can lure Day away from Ohio State, it’s a refreshing hire, too. I’m excited to give that a chance.
His NFL experience is limited to two seasons, but it’s who he worked for that’ll pique the interest of Titans fans. He spent 2015 as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, and 2016 as the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, both under head coach Chip Kelly. He also got his start under Kelly back in the early 2000s at the University of New Hampshire.
Kelly fizzled out as a head coach in the NFL, sure, but he damn sure knew Marcus Mariota. And, considering that Day incorporated a lot of the same spread offense schemes at Ohio State, you figure at least the ideology is an improvement from Mularkey’s stubborn offense.
Many of us were hoping that the Titans would go after an offensive-minded head coach, but the reality is that offensive innovation can come in a number of forms. One of those being with a fresh, up-and-coming coordinator who can implement a system that matches the strengths of the quarterback. Day could fit the bill.
Regardless, if you hire a good coach, you hire a good coach.
We’ll have to wait and see if anything materializes of this rumor, but if it happens, I’m completely cool with it.
