Nashville: I’m All for Expanded Booze Sales on Sunday

As long as I’ve been alive, you’ve had to stock up on your wine and liquor the night before big NFL games or those slow summer Sundays out on the lake. Not that I was trying to buy gin on Sundays as a kid…I’m just illustrating my point. It’s been a veritable institution in Nashville – you can’t buy liquor or wine on Sunday, and you can bet Chick-Fil-A will be closed. Two of the first things you tell everyone visiting town.

Now, The Tennssean is reporting that that could change:

Tennessee lawmakers are renewing a push to allow wine and liquor sales on Sunday, a move that could spur opposition from the state’s liquor retailers.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Gerald McCormick of Chattanooga, would align hours of liquor and wine sales with beer sales. Under current law, both grocery stores and liquor stores are not allowed to sell wine and liquor on major holidays and between 11 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Monday.

Obviously the liquor stores hated when we were able to buy wine at grocery stores. Afraid it was going kill all their business. But, that didn’t happen. Hard to imagine they’re going to lose it all because of something like this, but whatever – that’s going to be the argument.

But, for the consumer, that was a great win. This would be a great win, too. It’s all about convenience, folks. If I want to drown my sorrows in booze, I want said booze available on a moment’s notice.

Seems like you guys agree with me on that, too.  79.83% of people who voted in WKRN’s poll (so far) have said yes. They want wine and liquor on Sundays.

I’d love to hear some of the arguments against this. But, I have a feeling I know how that would go. Feel free to chime in, folks. You for or against this?
