One of the initiatives we developed in 2017 was to get more involved in our city. Be more ‘out and about’ in Nashville, if you will. We decided to make a more proactive effort to focus more on Nashville. Part of that initiative was to find “hidden gems” in the city, profile them, and review them. We got off to a good start, visiting the Corsair Brewstillery and Casa de Montecristo last Fall. Now, we’re setting our sights on one of our city’s calling cards: hot chicken.
We’re going to start reviewing Nashville hot chicken, and at this point, we’re assembling our list of potential locations to visit.
No….no…this idea isn’t original. I’m going to be completely honest here. This idea was inspired by Barstool Sports’ pizza reviews. Trust me – we are creative geniuses, but I will always give credit where credit is due. I’ll own that. That’s on me.
Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. Felt like the right thing to do. So, let’s start with the staples.
Bolton’s and Prince’s – the OGs of Nashville hot chicken. These guys have been in business forever and their reputations in the city are stellar. I’ve actually never had either of these, so I’m looking forward to checking them out.
Hattie B’s – the heavyweight in this fight. When everyone hears ‘hot chicken,’ they tend to think of Hattie B’s. I had it once, but I was piss drunk with a bachelor party and don’t particularly remember it that well. Hey, transparency and honesty, people.
Pepperfire – another of the restaurants that everyone brings up when I ask about hot chicken. Another of these institutions I’ve yet to eat at.
Beyond that? Let’s get some suggestions going. Personally, the best hot chicken I’ve had in Nashville has come from The Stillery down on 2nd Avenue. Really underrated, in my opinion – generous portions, killer slaw, killer fries. I’m also a fan of Party Fowl, and am eagerly anticipating the opening of the Donelson location.
Outside of that, I’ve pulled a few locations from lists people have compiled and published online, but I want to hear the voice of the people. Shoot us a tweet or comment here – what are you some of your hot chicken hidden gems?
