Wrestlemania 34 will be here before you know it. We’re in full-on Wrestlemania season at this point, and rumors are swirling daily. It’s the biggest show of the year, and plans already seem to be in place for a few matches. Let’s hit the current rumored card.
Wrestlemania 34’s Rumored “Big Five”
Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns – This is the match Vince McMahon has wanted for three years now, and I’m largely okay with it. We know that these two can deliver on the big stage. But, that said – it’s still a rematch. So, naturally, the excitement level is going to be down a bit. I’m anxious to see what the crowd reaction is going to be for this match. But, all in all, I get it.
WWE Championship: A.J. Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura – This is the match that we have all wanted ever since Nakamura made his main roster debut on Smackdown Live. I have no gripe with this one whatsoever.
John Cena vs. Undertaker – Multiple reports have indicated that the plan is indeed to run with Cena-‘Taker in New Orleans. I may be in the minority here, but I’m not for it. Could it be good? Yeah, sure. But, they’re about four years too late in pulling the trigger on this one. Now, I’ve lost interest, and quite frankly, don’t want to see the Dead Man labor through another performance like he did in Orlando. I’m fine with missing out on this match because I don’t think it’ll be what it could’ve been a few years ago.
The Rock & Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H & Stephanie McMahon – There’s only one reason to run this match: buzz. Rousey’s debut, paired with The Rock….of all people, The Rock?!?! Are you kidding me? You can already see them making the rounds on Good Morning America, Today, and Jimmy Fallon. It’s all about mainstream appeal. Plus, we don’t know what Rousey’s like in the ring, and since there’s no way McMahon could believably stand up to her, a squash could mask Rousey’s ability. Again, we don’t know – that may not be an issue at all. But, I just don’t care to see this match whatsoever.
Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Braun Strowman – This one came out a couple of weeks ago, but I don’t know that I buy that it’s penciled in. Would I love it? Absolutely – this is about as fresh and unique of a matchup as you can get in 2018. Plus, I love seeing the Intercontinental Championship booked in such high regard. But, Miz is going to become a daddy, and the baby’s due right around Wrestlemania. So, that’s why I have a hard time believing the WWE has this match penciled in as one of the “big five.”
All in all, I look at it, and it doesn’t really do much for me. Now, if I’m the casual fan, I’m looking at that and thinking, “holy shit – that sounds awesome!” Of course, that’s why the WWE is rolling with a card like this. And, to be fair, it also matters largely how we get to these matches.
They could string together a few weeks of Raws and Smackdowns that would have me salivating over these matches by Wrestlemania. We’ll just have to wait and see. Nakamura-Styles and Miz-Strowman sounds awesome to me, and I know Lesnar-Reigns will be good, but those other two…meh. Could be better.
Also, let’s get at least one of the rumored Women’s Championship matches into the top five promotion/marketing slots. Right now, reports suggest we’re getting Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka on the Smackdown side of things, and Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax for Raw. Both of these matches should be considered among the main events, and I think once we see this card come to fruition, we’ll see them promoted as main events.
Happy Wrestlemania season, bay bay!
