This ‘Teddy Bridgewater to the Titans’ Talk Has Raised My Eyebrows

We’re about two weeks from NFL free agency officially beginning. While we really have no inkling as to what the Tennessee Titans will actually be looking for in a free agent, we can damn sure speculate (reasonably). And, I guess we’re only going to talk about Minnesota Vikings free agents on this blog this year. But, hey – there’s an interesting name that keeps popping in discussion: Teddy Bridgewater. I can’t help it that he just so happens to be coming from the same team as the only other dude we’ve done a write-up on this free agency season.

But, as it turns out, it sure looks like Bridgewater will hit free agency and now the former first round pick out of Louisville (Luh-vull) is looking at an open market for his services.

Before his devastating knee injury, Bridgewater looked like he had potential to develop into a championship caliber quarterback. The stats weren’t all that great, but he went 17-11 as a starter, and in 2015, when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record and NFC North Championship, he was even selected to the Pro Bowl.

If he can prove that the knee that was basically destroy is fully healed, he could be an outrageous value to someone – say the Denver Broncos…Cleveland Browns…Arizona Cardinals. But, all of these people calling for him to come to the Titans have me like:

That’s a quarterback controversy waiting to happen. Remember when Titans fans were calling into radio shows calling for Marcus Mariota’s head after a bad game or two? What do you think the mood in this city would’ve been if the Titans had literally anyone except for Matt Cassel as backup?

Plus, we’ve talked ad nauseam about Mariota’s injury history. So, if you’re worried about a quarterback with an extensive injury history, why would you bring in a quarterback with an extensive injury history to be his backup?

Now, you could make an argument that the Titans would bust this thing into an open competition for the starting quarterback spot. That’s an intense camp battle in the making, assuming Bridgewater is the Bridgewater we saw going to the Pro Bowl in 2015. I don’t think these two quarterbacks are really all that far apart in terms of potential and ability.

But, what could the Titans realistically get out of this deal? The floor is a relatively unproven commodity at quarterback, and the ceiling is an above average starter in the NFL. There’s too much risk in that for my liking. Plus, franchise quarterbacks aren’t easy to find, and with Bridgewater’s potential, he won’t come cheap.

I say don’t worry about the money, let Bridgewater sign elsewhere, and get a veteran backup….hey…maybe Case Keenum?! Another Vikings-to-Titans free agent article coming soon.
