BREAKING: The Titans Will Be Just Fine Without Odell Beckham, Jr.

I told myself I wasn’t going to do this. Earlier in the week, I saw Titans Facebook (always wise) clamoring for the services of one Odell Beckham, Jr.. He’s been in the news recently because John Mara said he was getting fed up with Beckham’s shit, and rumors of a trade have been swirling all week. But, now, he’s saying that he’s not on the trading block. So, who really knows?!

But, it wouldn’t matter if we were talking about the Jags trading Tom Coughlin. Titans Facebook would be asking if we should trade for him to play backup quarterback.

So, I just left this “story” alone. But, yesterday, I just happened to stumble upon a pretty reliable source (I don’t hate B/R) that addressed the possibility.

Courtesy of Brad Gagnon at Bleacher Report:

Like the Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans don’t have a high-end draft pick to peddle this offseason. But unlike the Jags, the Titans have the cap space to sign a player like Beckham to a long-term deal without having to miss a meal.

I feel like I’ve been banging this drum for months now. But, I feel like the Titans are okay with the receiving corps they have for 2018. This unit should get a year to prove itself, and if we want to revisit it next Spring, then by all means, let’s do it. But, I’m happy with giving Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews, Taywan Taylor, and Tajae Sharpe a chance

Is Beckham a prolific receiver? Absolutely. There’s no denying that. But, he’s not going to come cheap. The Titans would have to give up a boat load in order to get a player of his magnitude. I mean, we’re talking about one of the 2-3 best at his position in the entire league.

Plus, just because they have the cap space doesn’t mean they should use it. The Titans should be thinking about locking down Marcus Mariota and Taylor Lewan longterm. There’s always a way to work the books to use some of this cap space for that.

But, reading Gagnon’s article further, he actually proposed a trade.

Potential trade

Titans receive: Beckham

Giants receive: No. 25 overall pick in 2018, third-round pick in 2019, WR Taywan Taylor

This is hilarious to me. I mean, the fact that Taylor would carry any sort of weight in a trade proposal is comical. The kid has a wealth of potential, don’t get me wrong. But, he’s not going to sweeten the deal for OBJ at all.

He showed a lot of promise as a rookie, but Mike Mularkey and Terry Robiskie had no idea how to use him. Just….jet sweep after jet sweep. They very rarely sent him downfield! So, you can’t really use him at all the same way you’d use Beckham! That proposal’s just plain not enough – I’d recommend replacing Taylor with another draft pick, or maybe a more impactful player at a position of need like Adoreé Jackson or something. Maybe that deal’s a little more credible. But, let’s not act like Taylor is the all-world receiver he can be just yet.

Regardless, the Titans are going to be just fine without Beckham.
