We are truly living in the future, people. Modern science has made the convenience of a more enjoyable, comfortable life possible. But, every now and then, you hear about an individual or group (scientists, as they are often called) really going above and beyond the limitations of society’s imagination. These brave, transcendent souls have given us inventions and ideas that no one has ever thought of before. Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, George Washington Carver, and this guy who wired his car to play Toto’s “Africa” every time his keys were left in the ignition and his door was open.
If you were forced to hear something every time you opened your car door, you could do worse than Toto’s “Africa” — a pleasant tune that would surely leave you in a good mood for your ride.
Self-described Volvo enthusiast Chris Ng wanted to customize the door chimes on his old Volvo 240. Now, every time he opens his car door and his keys are still in the ignition, an 8-bit version of Toto’s “Africa” plays instead of those annoying bells.
On his Kickstarter page, Ng notes that it took him two days to put the pieces together. He hopes to create a prototype which can be easily installed on other vehicles, so you too can hear some sweet jams instead of an aggravating chime when you open your car door.

What a scientist. What a huge win for the science community today. There’s really no better way to spend two days than trying to figure out how to get your car to play Toto’s “Africa” when the door’s left open.
It’s even in a classic 8-bit form! Like, this is straight out of an episode of Stranger Things. I kept waiting for the Demogorgan to pop out and eat someone.
Like many miracles of modern science, this has me thinking, “why didn’t we think of this sooner? How is 2018 and we’re just now figuring this out?” We need this guy solving the world’s problems STAT. Assemble a team, whatever you have to do, but get this guy figuring out how I can drink a gallon of booze on Friday night without being hungover Saturday morning.
That’s nice of him to set this up so other people can play different songs and all, but let’s be honest here – do you even need any other song playing? No. “Africa” is the be-all end-all of songs. I’m just spitballin’ here. Don’t really have my Songs Power Rankings handy, but I believe “Africa” by Toto would top that list.
It’s a great day for science.
