Drunk Stoney has done a lot of weird things. Full disclosure there for the sake of transparency. We don’t have to go into those stories, but I’m just letting you guys know that they exist, as I’m sure they do for a lot of people. ‘Drunk you’ is always a liability. You just never really know what drunk you is going to do. Take this man, for example. He ended up drunk and on top of a mountain ’cause he was lost looking for his hotel.
An Estonian tourist known as Pavel, has been enjoying a few drinks at Cervinia, a resort in Italy’s Valle d’Aosta, when he decided to call it a night and head back to his hotel.
However, it seemed that Pavel, 30, may have had a bit more to drink than he thought as his short walk back to his room soon turned into a mountain hike.
We all know that every good story begins with, “An Estonian tourist known as Pavel…”
According to Italian newspaperLa Stampa, Pavel seemed not to notice that he had taken a wrong turn and was heading up the mountain side until it was too late.
By the time 2am rolled around and Pavel was still climbing, he realised that he has made a grave mistake, but through sheer luck he stumbled across a closed restaurant and bar.
The bar, named Igloo, was nestled on the mountainside at an altitude of 2400m and, seeing it as his only refuge, the tipsy tourist forced his way in and bunkered down for the night.
One wrong turn and BOOM – you’re on a mountaintop in the Italian Alps. Crazy. CLASSIC Drunk Pavel!
I’d like to make fun of Pavel here, but I simply can’t. The truth is – Drunk Stoney almost ended up on a mountaintop in Park City, Utah three years ago.
True story – I won a spot on the company rewards trip at the day job I was working at the time. A big ski trip to Park City – except I’ve never skied before in my life and didn’t really have much interest in doing so. So, I just go drunk in the hotel for two straight days.
Anyway, on the second night, the company rented out the private area of Robert Redford’s restaurant. The booze was flowing, and actually had been flowing all day, and somehow I ended up at a table with all of the company executives. Had a great time, but I messed around and missed the shuttle back to the hotel.
No problem – it was a beautiful night, and uncharacteristically warm for February. So, I decided to take a short stroll back to the hotel. I gauged the trip on my way from the hotel to the restaurant and figured I was only about a half a mile down the road. Figured it was a relatively straight shot and I could figure it out. So, it made perfect sense. But, what we’re forgetting here is that part where I drank all day prior to this. The hotel was actually five miles away, and I got two miles into the hike, much too deep to give up and wander back to the restaurant, and realized I missed the turn somewhere.
Thankfully, I have a nearly impeccable sense of direction. Just when I was ready to walk into a convenience store and ask for help, terrified I had walked almost five miles in the wrong direction, I saw the warm glowing lights of the Burger King adjacent to the hotel. The ol’ gut done me right. Also, it’s worth noting that I didn’t have a smartphone at the time. Still rocking the flip phone, so there was no way for me to punch in an address.
And, that’s how I, too, nearly fell prey to the drunken mountain climbing – so I feel ya, Pavel….I feel ya.
