The 2018 NFL Draft takes place April 26-28 this year, and as it stands, the Tennessee Titans have one first round draft pick. General manager Jon Robinson and first year head coach Mike Vrabel currently hold the 25th overall selection. Over the next few weeks, your boy “Big Natural” Stoney Keeley will be taking a look at some of the prospects who are either rumored to be tied to or who make sense for the Titans.
There are a couple of really good guards that figure to go in the twenties on Thursday night. We’ve already profiled Will Hernandez, but Wynn is the other guy who figures to go in the first round. Where Hernandez has the raw strength, power, and potential, Georgia’s Wynn has the polish, technique, and elite competition experience. Both of these guys could be starting guards for a long time.
The Titans beefed up the interior of their offensive line in free agency. They retained Quinton Spain and Josh Kline. But, they also signed free agents Kevin Pamphile and Xavier Su’a-Filo. Ben Jones remains steadfast at center, but I’m not sure any of the new additions are viable long-term solutions at guard. Do the Titans need an insurance policy in case Spain’s 2017 regression was a true indicator of his performance and not just the result of the unit having a down year as a whole?
They’re in a unique position this year – not direly tied to any position. Sure, they need a pass rusher and an ILB, but if there’s no one worth taking at #25 there, I don’t expect they’ll force it to draft for need. If either of these guards are there, and say Harold Landry and Marcus Davenport are off the board, I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see either selected.
I’m a big fan of Hernandez – I think he’s a road-grading mauler who has potential to be one of those foundational type of pieces. But, Wynn has a different skill set that makes him an elite prospect as well. He’s fluid, quick, and his technique is tight. He has experience at tackle and guard, so could prove to be a dynamic asset to any team that drafts him.
But, his size kind of makes him a tweener. He’s built like a tackle, but lacks the typical athleticism you like in a tackle. But, he’s more athletic than your typical guard. That may give him a bit of a disadvantage in handling routine NFL strength, if he’s playing a bit out of position. I still say he’s worth a shot if all other options at other positions are exhausted.
Again, shout out to Voch Lombardi – dude’s one of my favorite NFL Draft guys. Give him a follow.
