Germany came into this year’s World Cup as one of the tournament’s powerhouses. They won the World Cup in 2014, and looked damn near unbeatable throughout qualifying. So, Mexican fans would get a glimpse of just how their tough feisty team would fare against the best in the world.
And, what happened? A 1-0 win for Mexico.
I’m sitting at Jonathan’s Grille in Mount Juliet, trying to have a nice dinner with my family, and this game is on the background. Completely commanded my attention. I mean, I could barely make out what my girlfriend and my mother were saying to me. I was zoned in on the game, and astonished at the outcome just like everyone else.
So, I can’t imagine what the actual Mexican fans felt like. Turns out, they felt like damn near causing an earthquake.
Mexicans jumping in jubilation on Sunday shook the ground hard enough to set off earthquake detectors and throngs danced in the streets after their team scored a surprise victory over World Cup defending champion Germany.
When star player Hirving Lozano scored a goal in the 35th minute, supporters jumped up and down, shouting, “Yes, we did it!”
The Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Investigations said highly sensitive earthquake sensors registered tremors at two sites in the capital seven seconds after the game’s 35th minute. It called them an “artificial” quake.
Big moment for Mexico, obviously. It’s a huge win that announces them to the world as serious contenders. This Mexican team is not one to be trifled with.
I want to know what it feels like to cause an earthquake, though. Is that something acceptable for a bucket list? Like, how can I organize that? What would have to happen in Nashville for us to cause an earthquake? Anything? I don’t know. I’m going to start researching that.
