Pekka Rinne Wins 2018 Vezina Trophy

The 2018 Vezina Trophy winner has been announced and his name is Pekka Rinne. Rinne won the award over fellow finalists Connor Hellebuyck and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Indeed, #Pekka4Vezina was a success.

This was undoubtedly Rinne’s best year in a career littered with incredible seasons. He struggled in Game 7 against Winnipeg in the playoffs and a certain segment of the Preds fan base called for his head. But, those people are terribly wrong. There’s no denying that he was the best in the business this season. Really, could not be happier for the guy, and in a season that ended in major disappointment for the Preds, this is a nice consolation prize.

Rinne went 42-13-4,  with a 2.31 GAA, and a save percentage of .927. He also posted a staggering eight shutouts. For more on Rinne’s 2017-18 season, check out Rachel K’s awesome profile over on On The Forecheck.

The Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL’s best goaltender. This was Rinne’s fourth Vezina nomination (2011, 2012, 2015), but his first win.

Herbie Brooks’ take:

“This is a slam dunk to me. I only posted the standard stats, but if you dig into it, Pekka Rinne is the runaway favorite. His numbers were just too good this year. If Pekka doesn’t bring home the Vezina, there should be an investigation.”

Go Preds!

PS. Shout out to Chris Mason for really spearheading the #Pekka4Vezina movement. It’s been a fun ride and I’m ecstatic that ended with Rinne taking home the hardware.
