Cameron Wolfe wrote an amazing piece on Titans rookie linebacker Rashaan Evans yesterday. I’m an Alabama fan, so I knew a bit about the guy from watching him play there….knew he was a country boy…but, man there was a nugget in Wolfe’s piece that absolutely blew my mind.
“…chasing a horse is unusual. Alex, a year-and-a-half younger than Rashaan, is the animal aficionado of the family. He brought the idea to Rashaan when the two were in fourth and fifth grade, respectively. Rashaan looked at him like he had two heads. Alex saw it as fun and exercise. He knew the family’s handful of Arabian horses, known for endurance, ran up to 30-35 miles per hour.
“That sounded dangerous: to run behind a horse? A horse is a powerful animal. It could kill you. I thought he was crazy,” Rashaan said. “But I tried it one day. Everything went good. We kept doing it. I enjoyed it. I actually got a little faster.”
Alex, the only one of the two to catch a horse, added: “When you’re having fun, you don’t realize it but it’s great conditioning and speed training. We ran with them for about 45 minutes every day from grade school through high school. If you can imagine running full speed for that long, you get a good bit of workout in.”
Can you imagine? There’s no doubt in my mind that if I tried to chase one of the horses we had when I was a kid, I would’ve been kicked into oblivion. Into the neighbor’s yard at least. I have never once looked at a horse and thought, “HOT DAMN – bet I could get fast as a spider monkey by chasin’ that thing.” NEVER. When horses came up to me, I was out. I don’t jive well with things that are roughly the size of five of me.
But, that’s just what separates the badasses of the world and the degenerate writers like myself. Evans is now the future of the Tennessee Titans defense, and I’m just sitting at my day job desk wasting my life away.
Anyway, the lesson learned here is that if you chase horses as a kid, you are destined for great things. Might as well strap the jet pack to your back, buddy, ’cause you’re going to the moon. Titan damn Up.
