How You Gonna Grill Out on Someone’s Tombstone?

Death is such a weird thing. It’s like humans have no idea how to process it and it makes us do the weirdest things. But, all you can really do is what you think is right. Some may find your handling of death respectful, some might not. But, regardless of  how you think about it, I think turning up on someone’s tombstone is a bit excessive. Is that fair to say?

The reader contacted the paper and explained he had been taking a shortcut through the Parish Church grounds at the time of the incident. He said: “A lovely afternoon spent at the Otley food and drink festival, followed by a meander home through the Parish Church grounds.
“Imagine the surprise to find three adults with about seven children enjoying a barbecue. “The cooking was being done on the raised tomb stone.”
He went on to say that his wife challenged the graveyard barbecue party, but to little avail. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “My wife remonstrated with the men. The ‘Chef’ patronisingly said ‘Thank you for you input, I’ve taken note.’ “So I took a photograph! Over trots the guy in blue and demands I delete the photographs. “In any case I was taking photos of him barbecuing on a tomb in sacred ground!”
So many questions.
Chief among them: is this the grave of someone they know? Or, is this a group of people just randomly deciding to show up and have a party in a graveyard?
If this is solely about having a unique backdrop for your party, then yeah – that’s easily disrespectful. It sounds like something some rich people who think they own the world would do. “Let’s party in a graveyard because we can.”
But, if they’re grilling over the grave of someone they know, then maybe they’re trying to honor that person? Maybe that person LOVED barbecues and this is their way of keeping their memory alive. I don’t know. Like I said, people do weird things to honor loved ones because they don’t know how to process grief.
Or, maybe it’s the grave of someone they hate, in which case, I love the move. Nothing asserts dominance over an enemy like grilling up and eating a burger literally over their dead body.
We just don’t have enough context or facts to make a reasonable determination here. But, I do tend to side with the “how you gonna do this to someone?” argument.

You know the drill by now – cue it up:
