Southern Underground Pro: Not Problematic Recap

Sorry for this coming out a couple of days late, but we’re coming off SCI weekend so I think y’all will forgive me. It was a jam-packed Thursday-Sunday for me (and so many of you), but I would be lying if I didn’t admit I was looking forward to #SUPSunday from the jump. So, when Sunday morning hit, the wife and I were up ready to hit The Crying Wolf before the jaunt to The Basement East for that hit of Southern Underground Pro we were needing.

1. Slade Porter vs. Barackus vs. Jarrod Evans- I missed some of this match as I was getting a quick comment from Brett Ison (he doesn’t hate me as much as he hates you) and Stephen Jensen (shout out Fight Talk) but from what I did see this was a damn fine opener. Slade P gets the dub.

2. Allie Kat vs. Samantha Heights- The inaugural women’s match in SUP history set a high standard for future. These two ladies…errr…lady and body kat…beat the hell out of each other to a delighted crowd. Badass stuff y’all, with Allie Kat getting the win but a great showing all around.

3. Kerry Awful vs. O’Shay Edwards- This may be the most underrated match in a log jam of great matches from the weekend. O’Shay brought the fight (he does that), but Kerry was able to withstand and persevere (he does that). Big ups to both guys for putting on this kind of a hard-hitting banger after such a busy weekend. Search this match out when the show is posted on powerbomb tv.

4. SUPer Scramble for the PWF Heavyweight title- So we had Kevin Ku (defending champ), Danhausen (best SUP entrance ever?) Jake Parnell (Warhorse) , Gary Jay (Gary Fucking Jay), Joey Lynch (2018 SCI Champ), Craig Mitchell (loved by Poppa Bear), and Mance Warner (Certified Southern Psycho) all coming together to give us maybe the craziest shit I’ve ever seen.

Gary and Jake continued to beat the shit out of each other, which has been a joy to watch all year long. Danhausen continues to shine under the SUP spotlight. THE moment of this match, though, goes to Ol Mancer for pulling a goddamn knife (to quote Lane) mid-match. Craig Mitchell was forced to the ground literally at knife point and the SUP universe couldn’t have been happier.

Side note: I wasn’t shocked to find out Danhausen isn’t afraid of knives. The frantic finish ended with Joey Lynch being pinned by Ku with only seconds to spare. Ku escapes and somehow retains his title. Mance was last seen escaping The Basement East via the side door and is still at large. But, to be fair, Ol Mancer is kind of always at large.

5. EFFY vs. Nick Iggy- Daddy vs. Granddaddy. This…this was…sexual insanity. I’m not sure I can go into much detail mainly because of FCC violations. I lost track of how many violent pelvic thrusts ended up being thrown so that should tell you everything you need to know. Iggy wins VIA DICK PIC.

6. They Might Be Giants (Marko Stunt and Cabana Man Dan) vs. No New Friends (Danny Adams and Mike Outlaw)- The crowd was sooooo hot for They Might Be Giants. That place got-dare I say- Beatles loud for Marko/Dan. That said, I’d like to take a moment to say that I love No New Friends simply for not using the song No New Friends for entrance music. That’s how little they need new friends. Marko and CMD used everything in the artillery including tag team flop chops to secure the win. What a weekend for Marko, as he also won the first ever Scenic City Futures Showcase Tournament AND sold a couple of hats to the SoBros. Well done sir.

7. Brett Ison vs. Tripp Cassidy- This was angry, violent and not that pleasant to watch. Pretty much exactly what we should have expected. Tripp came out firing, but that’s what Brett wanted. He wanted this to be a street fight and that’s exactly what he got. Vicious elbows and forearms softened up Tripp before Ison finally hit Street Justice. Instead of ending it though, Brett took the moment in. For years, he’d been in the shadows of the circus…now he’s the guy shutting off the lights to the show. Tripp takes a second Street Justice and Ison gets the 1-2-3. Fade to black.

8. Mr. Brickster vs. Teddy King- We at the SoBros Network enjoy these guys for much different reasons so we were pumped to be the sponsors for this match up. We had a chance to talk to Brickster over SCI weekend and he is truly one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. He hugged us and called us family at this show which was pretty awesome. We’re Brickster guys, y’all. On the flip side, Teddy is a dick and we think he’s funny at times. Great back and forth work throughout with King nearly sneaking out a win before Brickster was able to work his way back and gets another big win under the SUP banner.

9. I Quit Match: Curt Stallion vs. AJ Gray- THE main event of SCI weekend was an I Quit match featuring two guys with approximately zero quit in them. Both were dealt some gnarly shots from the kendo stick aka ol’ reliable. AJ took a couple of cracks to the dome and throat that had a couple of the SoBros shaking their heads.

At one point, I’m pretty sure Curt waterboarded AJ at the bar. AJ withstood all this and refused to quit even as he was wrapped up in the ropes with Curt raining down shot after shot. Finally, SUP official Dylan Hales threw in a towel on behalf of Gray. Curt bashes Dylan up with Nick Iggy and Kerry Awful appearing at ringside trying to bring order. Before The Carnies could do anything, they were attacked by Brett Ison and O’Shay Edwards. Curt/Brett/O’Shay leave the Tennessee crew slumped and the SUP universe stunned. It’s on y’all.

I feel like I say it every time, but this was the best Southern Underground Pro show to date. After a long weekend of wrestling, it’s pretty amazing to say the last show of the weekend was my favorite, but start to finish it very well may have been. Big time shout out to the SUP crew for always treating us (the fans) right and to the SUP universe that always make The Basement East feel something like a family reunion. Southern Underground Pro will be back with “Don’t Look In The Basement East” on September 23rd.
