Seems an Appropriate Time to Relive Urban Meyer Talking About Lying

Major props to Brett McMurphy for breaking this Urban Meyer story yesterday. I know I make a lot of tongue-in-cheek jokes about what we do here being journalism….probably leads you guys to think I’m not very serious about it. But, man oh man – when a story like this breaks, I love to sink my teeth into it. Nothing gets me fired up and high on life like good quality journalism, especially when it’s coming from a guy like McMurphy.

But, in case you missed it, the essence of this story is pretty simple: Meyer has been caught lying about the serious allegations of domestic abuse against now-fired assistant Zach Smith. More so, he did absolutely nothing about it, choosing to “help the abuser and enable the abuser and believe whatever story Zach was telling everybody,” according to Courtney Smith.

So, naturally, leave it to the Internet to remind us of this gem from the past.

“If you intentionally lie about committing violations, your career is over.” Funny how karma rears its ugly head.

But, this is a crazy situation. And, I’m glad that I reminded you guys of my take on the type of journalism we promote here on this site. Why? Because I can unequivocally say “Urban Meyer is a total fuck face” and I don’t have to answer to anyone. But, you look at the trail of sleazy corruption that is Meyer’s career….from all the arrests at Florida, to his phony retirement and everything in between…..and I don’t know how you can forgive the guy for all of it. I don’t know how you recognize him as anything more than a simple scumbag.

31 arrests while he was at Florida. 31! But, if you were a good player, you were only “punished” with a 2-4 game suspension. And, that’s not even mentioning Meyer’s handling of Aaron Hernandez, who was found guilty of murder and eventually committed suicide in prison last year.

He’s gone – cooked. He has to be. And, if you dig into Title IX, considering he and his wife are BOTH employees of Ohio State, that’s what could ultimately bring him down. To no one’s surprise, Clay Travis was on top of this yesterday:

Under the Ohio State employee handbook all employees would be obligated to report allegations of domestic assault by other employees. That’s especially the case for Urban Meyer, who is Smith’s superior, and for Shelley Meyer, who is also an Ohio State employee.

As McMurphy reports: “Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and instructor of Clinical Practice at the Ohio State University College of Nursing. She too is bound by Title IX standards.”

That’s why I believe Ohio State will have to fire Urban Meyer before this story is finished.

Leaving aside the morality of his decision making, he violated his obligations as an Ohio State employee, lied to his bosses, and has now been caught lying to his bosses about it.

Meyer is done, folks. And, if he’s not, then we have to have a serious conversation about our infatuation with winning football games.
