Todd Gurley is coming under fire for his take on cats and dogs. For those that missed it, you can find the direct quote here:
What would you list as your dislikes?
Driving. Waking up early. And I hate dogs. I love cats, though. Cats are so cool. Actually, I’m probably gonna get some this year.
Sorry, you’re gonna get a bunch of cats?
Two, at least, so they can, you know, conversate or whatever. I mean, how would I feel if I was a cat and someone bought me and just left me by myself for like 20 years?
So, you’re the Crazy Cat Lady.
Yeah, I’ll be Cat Dude.
“I hate dogs.”
That’s a bold statement in today’s America. You’re immediately shamed into oblivion if you admit that you don’t like dogs, and I’m here to say it, folks: that’s wrong.
Why?
Dogs are so needy all the time. It’s like they’re constantly begging for your attention. I’m kind of a loner at heart. I do rather enjoy my quiet time to myself – so, it’s a bit annoying when my dog runs up and puts his head in my lap when I’m trying to think or do something. They’re too energetic at times. I don’t always feel like getting up and running around the yard to keep my dog engaged. So, yeah – I can definitely see how it’s possible for someone to hate dogs and want nothing to do with them.
Cats, on the other hand, are much more independent and laid back. There’s a definite vibe to a cat that a dog can’t replicate, and for some reason, people call that “evil.” Cats aren’t bad creatures just because they aren’t running in circles, jumping up on the furniture, and slobbering all over everything all the time. Cats are actually much more my speed.
So, lay off – whatever happened to ‘to each his own?’ And, whatever happened to freedom? Last I checked, this was still America. A man can have whatever opinion he wants, unless, I guess, that opinion is cats > dogs, or that police should not shoot innocent black people (oops, I went there).
Now, I’m an animal lover (except sharks – fuck sharks). I do like dogs – I know it doesn’t sound like it. But, I do. I’m just a fan of animal companionship in general – but for the record, I stand in support of Gurley’s preference and I stand in support of his freedom to have that preference and let it be known.
Finally, as an aside – Gurley sounds like he’d be a lot of fun to hang out with.
