The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.
Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2018 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.
2018 Heisman Watch: Week 2
5. Drew Lock, Missouri QB – Lock had five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in Mizzou’s 40-13 win over Wyoming. The Tigers are 2-0, and have scored 91 points in their two games. Lock will get his first test on the road against Purdue this weekend.
4. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama QB – Another solid outing for the Crimson Tide quarterback, Tagovailoa posted 228 passing yards and a whopping four touchdowns against Arkansas State. The Jalen Hurts timeshare could end up hurting Tagovailoa’s Heisman chances, as he might not get the opportunity to post video game numbers.
3. Will Grier, West Virginia QB – The Mountaineers have scored 92 points through two games. In those games, Grier has 761 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception. West Virginia could be a dark horse playoff contender this year, as Grier makes a strong case for the best quarterback in the country.
2. Benny Snell, Jr., Kentucky RB – 300 rushing yards on the season has the key cog in the Wildcats offense placed 5th in the FBS. Just two touchdowns on the season, and not a single one against Florida, but if you want to talk about “Heisman moments,” putting your team on your back and defeating a rival you hadn’t defeated since the 80s definitely qualifies.
1. Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin RB – One of last year’s Heisman favorites got a bit of a slow start in Week 1, rushing for just 145 yards and two touchdowns against Western Kentucky. But, man – he came out guns-a-blazin’ against New Mexico to the tune of 253 yards and three touchdowns. He now leads the FBS in rushing yards with 398 yards on the season. Wisconsin is 2-0, ranked at #6 in the AP Poll.
