Eagles at Titans: Preview

Philadelphia opened this game as 3-point favorites. The over-under was set at 42. As of Thur. Sep. 27, Eagles were trending upward as greater favorites while the over/under was trending downward. Expected conditions are 76F with 3MPH winds and clear. Perfect weather for football.

Another Titans matchup that should provide two teams who excel at trench warfare. This game should prove more electric than Tennessee’s 9-6 Week 3 victory. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz makes his second start since last season’s ACL injury. Marcus Mariota will return as Tennessee’s starting quarterback after he missed his last two starts, although he did come off the bench to lead a Week 3 victory amidst a flurry of field goals.

Tennessee’s offense faces a daunting matchup. Philadelphia’s outside cornerbacks Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby are far and away the most exploitable element of this Jim Schwartz defense. Good thing for them that they’re facing a pass offense that’s been non-existent due to quarterback injuries and an inability to adjust to first-year offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur. The Titans are winning games like the Denver Broncos did with Tim Tebow: sheer grit. Grit doesn’t win daily fantasy sports tournaments (well, maybe sometimes with running backs). Recently released wide receiver Rishard Matthews shouldn’t have played much of a role. Taywan Taylor was earning reps away from him. Still, it’s hard to find much value with Taylor and 2017 first-rounder Corey Davis, who has yet to score his first career NFL regular-season touchdown. It’s a scenario of weakness vs weakness.

Can daily fantasy sports gamers expect more fireworks during Wentz’s second start? Perhaps. Don’t underestimate Tennessee’s defense. Since 2017, Tennessee’s run defense has been among the elite. Not ideal when we’re talking about Philadelphia’s unpredictable running back committee. Injuries have made it even muckier. Eagles No. 1 wide receiver Alshon Jeffery could make his 2018 debut. Tennessee has a solid trio of cornerbacks with Malcolm Butler, Adoree’ Jackson and Logan Ryan. Safety Kevin Byard is one of the NFL’s rising superstars. Tennessee supports them with multiple quality pass-rushers. Overall, it’s a very solid defense.

I’d stay away from Tennessee. If you’re making 50-plus lineups, then maybe a share or two of WR Davis. Even then, I’d likely avoid this like a plague. The Titans could win this game. I’m just not seeing much fantasy production. More like a 16-13 game. A $2300 defense is playable, although it has limited upside. I’d rather pay up $300 for a home Chicago Bears defense against Ryan Fitzpatrick. Avoid Tennessee’s unpredictable running back committee. I guess one could try a cheap PPR-back such as Dion Lewis. I wouldn’t. New York Jets running back Bilal Powell is cheaper and had a big game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. I’ll never understand why they don’t play him more.

You can play Eagles. This isn’t the most explosive matchup for them. They’re trying to get settled from early-season injuries. They’re a road team facing an opponent who thrives on slug-fests and ugly football. Tennessee hasn’t yet faced any quality tight ends. A couple wide receivers have converted big-yardage plays against CB Butler. If I had to rank Philadelphia players, it’d go: Ertz (safer, few decent options at TE), Jeffery (more boom-or-bust potential), Agholor as a distant third. Eagles defense is playable.

Always check the injury report before each contest.
