Fantasy Warfare: Luke Cage vs. Colossus

Yeah, I get it – the “fantasy warfare” concept is played to death on comic book forums all over the Internet. I don’t think many of our readers are fan-boying on Reddit, but I damn sure know we have plenty of super-hero fans and aficionados who keep up with the SoBros Network dot com engine. So, let’s just get some water cooler talk going. It’s the return of the Fantasy Warfare column on the SoBros network. Wow, so original. Today, we’re going to talk about a battle between strong durable guys: Luke Cage vs. Colossus.

Luke Cage has seen quite the re-emergence in Marvel lore with the advent of the new Netflix series. While I have my criticisms of some of the dialogue in the series, the first and second seasons are both among the best of Marvel’s Netflix mythos. Likewise, Colossus is a name that is popping up more after the character stole scenes in the Deadpool movies. Both are about as durable as they come, and I’m not talking about strength of will and determination. I mean it literally – like, you can’t just shoot these guys. So, with that in mind, and with both of these guys fresh in our minds, I thought it’d be a good time to revisit the Fantasy Warfare series. LFG.

Powers

Cage earned his superhuman strength and bulletproof skin as a result of a failed experiment (stop me if you’ve heard that one before in a comic book). His skin is literally resistant to gun shots, stabbing, any kind of invasive act. He’s an official Grade A badass, and having teamed with Iron Fist for a large portion of his superhero career, learned how to fight with discipline in addition to his ability to flat out scrap like any good street fighter does. He’s also able to recover quickly if/when he is actually injured. Cage is largely known for his allegiance with Danny Rand in the Power Man and Iron Fist series, but he’s also been a member of The Avengers and The Thunderbolts.

As for Colossus, it’s the same sort of deal – superhuman strength, incredible durability. Mainly because he’s literally made of some unknown steel-like substance. That’s his mutant power – he can basically become an indestructible literal man of steel. He’s one of the X-Men who has basically worked on every team that starts with an X. He’s not unlike Cage in that he can withstand bullets, knives, etc., but the main difference is in his ability to survive tremendous impact. Like Cage, he’s also had some great training partners, namely Wolverine and Nightcrawler. Colossus’ only noted (major) weakness is his susceptibility to vibranium.

Intangibles

Considering Colossus discovered his powers rescuing his sister from getting hit by a tractor (true), you figure he has a pretty courageous strength of will. But, I don’t know that he beats Cage in the ‘strength of will’ category given everything that Cage has gone through. As for experience, Colossus definitely gets the edge having worked so extensively with such a collection of heroes as the X-Men.

The Verdict

It’s fun to talk about, but let’s be real, guys – Colossus would smash Cage’s ass in no time. As evidenced in the Netflix series, Cage is still vulnerable to internal injuries. Just because his skin is bulletproof, it doesn’t mean he can survive extensive impact. Not only that, but we know that Cage can drown. In his mutant form, Colossus doesn’t even require oxygen to survive. All of this, and the bottom line is that Colossus is just plain stronger and more durable.

The only thing that gives Cage an advantage would be if he showed up with some sort of vibranium weapon, or if, for some reason, he fought Colossus outside of his mutant form. But, hand to hand, tit for tat, there’s no way Cage wins this fight.

Winner: Colossus
