Holy shit we have A LOT to talk about y’all. The week started with everyone wondering what will happen with Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team after the shenanigans at UFC 229. Rumors were swirling that Khabib could be stripped of the title though I doubt that was ever really an option with everything Conor McGregor has gotten away with. Nope, no stripping of the title but Khabib’s fight purse ($2 million) has been withheld. No suspension as of yet for Khabib, though Conor has a medical suspension of a month due to the mauling that was unleashed upon him.
While all of this talk was going on, word began to leak out that Dustin Poirier was injured and will be pulling out of his fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 230. This was beyond heartbreaking as those two would have brought the fucking pain. Now the question becomes “What do you do with Nate?” The obvious answer was Conor/Nate III, but with Conor’s injury and apparent sights still on a Khabib rematch (not sure we need that) this fell apart right away. So what does Nate do? He of course says that he’ll wait for a title fight with Khabib as well. We have all the makings of the greatest triple threat ever! Sadly, as much as the UFC is trying, they are not professional wrestling. So, we won’t be getting that barnburner of a match. So, at least right meow, it seems that Khabib, Conor and Nate will all be taking some time off to figure out what’s next.
Now for some good news…Derrick Lewis is getting a title shot! That’s right Mr. “My Balls Was Hot” is gonna square up with Daniel Cormier for DC’s first heavyweight title defense. How amazing is this? Derrick flat out said he didn’t want a title fight now he’s main eventing at Madison Square Garden against one of the greatest fighters of all time and getting PAID. Big ups to The Black Beast.
The next bit of news to be announced was that Jon “Bones” Jones and Alexander Gustafsson would FINALLY have the rematch so many of us have been frothing at the mouth to see. A little over five years after their first fight ended in a CLOSE decision victory for Jon the two will do battle once again. Gus has put on a couple of impressive performances since, including a hellacious knockout of Glover Teixera last May, and the guy went toe to toe with DC before losing a split decision. The years have been more sporadic for Bones with all of his legal issues taking him out of the cage. This isn’t a tune up fight for Bones to ease him back into the fight game by any means. Uncle Dana is throwing him into the fire and I can’t wait to see what happens.
The final news of note that came out this week has been the Khabib power play. If you haven’t heard, Khabib made a post saying if his friend, Zubaira Tukhugov, was fired for punching Conor in the post fight melee, then Khabib would break his contract and quit the UFC. What a fucking move y’all. I mean in all of this, it seemed like Khabib’s boys would take the hit, but my man is just too loyal to let that happen. Khabib knows he has the swinging dick right now as there isn’t a bigger fight in the world to make than Khabib/Conor II. He knows it and more importantly he knows that Uncle Dana knows it.
Before UFC 229, I wrote that Conor owned the UFC and I guess he still does, but some of that ownership has swung over Khabib’s way with the total domination he showed last Saturday, Sure, Uncle Dana could let Khabib go and keep pushing Conor to the moon but you’re always gonna have people like me saying “That’s nice, but Khabib whooped that ass.”
