2018 SEC Power Rankings: Week 10

And then there were two.

Here we are, ladies and gentlemen. We now know who will be in Atlanta in early December with the winner clearly going to the College Football Playoff (unless, you know, one of them loses a game between now and then).

Outside of the top two, there is still plenty to play for in the SEC. We have several teams competing for bowl eligibility and rivalry weekend is three weeks away.

1. Alabama – Death Valley proved to be nothing for the Tide last Saturday night. Beating the #3 team by 29 is impressive and the game wasn’t as close as the score. Firmly planted at #1, everyone is now discussing if this Alabama team is one of the greatest of all time. I need to see a National Championship and the domination continue before I weigh in. I will say Quinnen Williams is one hell of a player and made a statement Saturday night. The Tide needs to avoid a trap game when they welcome Mississippi State.

2. Georgia – The Bulldogs sealed their trip to Atlanta by handling the Kentucky Wildcats. In the second half. Georgia’s offense got rolling against the touted Wildcat defense, running away with the win. D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield showcased the Bulldog rush attack, thrashing a defense that had been stingy all season. They host Auburn this weekend.

3. LSU – Losing to Alabama isn’t the end of the world, but it might seem like it for the Tigers right now. Getting smashed on your home field (at night, where it’s supposed to be REALLY hard to play) isn’t how the #3 team should perform. Joe Burrow spent the entire game running for his life. That LSU defense that was supposed to stop Tua Tagovailoa? Failed. LSU is still a good team, but they’ll need to rebound and aim for that 10-win mark. They head to Arkansas.

4. Kentucky – The Cinderella story of Kentucky winning the East is officially dead. But, man, wasn’t it a fun ride while it lasted? Kind of like dreaming about winning the lottery, but then realizing you didn’t get any numbers right. It happens. On the plus side, the Wildcats can still finish with 10 wins and land a solid bowl game. They head to Tennessee this weekend.

5. Mississippi State – I still can’t figure out Mississippi State. After struggling for weeks, the Bulldogs finally seem to be gaining some traction. Nick Fitzgerald seems to be playing at the level we all expected. Granted, it was against Louisiana Tech, but you have to give him credit for jump-starting the offense. The Bulldogs will need him at his best when they roll into Alabama this weekend.

6. Auburn – Trailing late, Auburn showed some much needed toughness to secure a win against a solid Texas A&M team. While the Tigers still can’t seem to establish a rushing attack, Jarrett Stidham picked up the slack. Auburn still seems to be a dangerous team and could play the role of spoiler in the next few weeks. They could start with Georgia this weekend.

7. Missouri – How about those Tigers? Drew Lock and company walked into the Swamp and stomped on the Gators. 250 yards and three touchdowns later, Lock dismantled the Florida defense. Even the Mizzou defense got in on the fun and shut down Feleipe Franks. With five wins currently, Missouri should land a bowl game by the end of the season. They host Vanderbilt this weekend.

8. South Carolina – A close call against Ole Miss showed that South Carolina can win in a scrappy game. The offense played a solid game, with Jake Bentley having a good outing. The defense allowed the Rebels to have free reign of the field, and has a LOT of work to do. One win away from bowl eligibility, the Gamecocks head to Florida.

9. Texas A&M – Remember when I said that this A&M squad wouldn’t collapse in November? I’m not prepared to say they’ve collapsed, but dropping the lead to Auburn really seemed like a Kevin Sumlin move. The Aggies looked like the better team all day, so at least they have that to hold on to. They’re on the verge of bowl eligibility and should pass the mark against Ole Miss.

10. Florida – It has been a loooooooong two weeks for the Gators. Getting destroyed by Georgia was tough, but at least understandable. Handing Mizzou their first SEC win of the year? Much less excusable. Did I mention that the Gators allowed over 200 rushing yards from Missouri? That happened. Now they welcome South Carolina.

11. Vanderbilt – The Commodores enjoyed a bye week and now head to Missouri.

12. Tennessee – The Vols notched an important win, but only defeated Charlotte 14-3. It was fairly ugly and unimpressive for the Vols, barely scraping up any offense. Less than 200 yards of total offense and no rushing attack won’t inspire much confidence going forward. Kentucky comes to town this weekend.

13. Ole Miss – It’s really weird to me that Ole Miss has five wins. Bowl eligibility isn’t on the table, which might be a good thing considering how they’ve been playing and what’s left on the schedule.

14. Arkansas – A bye week for Arkansas means they can’t lose. So that’s a win. Sort of.
