Best of 2018: New Music Thursday

I’m going to give you guys a peek behind the curtain today. Many of you know that New Music Thursday is one of the preeminent features that the SoBros Network regularly puts out. I know that my guitar playing ability is a bit hypnotizing. But, what you may not know is that I don’t actually write the songs I play. I know, this is probably like the day you found out professional wrestling is fake, but bear with me.

I have a ton of fun doing this bit – and the basic premise is that I pick a song and record a minute-long video where I only actually play for about 10 seconds and spend the remaining 50 seconds coming up with a ridiculous and false back story as to how I drew inspiration to write said song. Like I said, it’s fun…and so far the response has been well, or else I wouldn’t keep doing it.

Hopefully you’ve gathered yourself after hearing this revelation, because in the spirit of ‘Best of 2018’ season, I’ve compiled a quick playlist of my favorite clips from this year’s installments of #NewMusicThursday!

Best of 2018: New Music Thursday

This one got some really good social response – I don’t think anyone had ever heard an acoustic version of “I’m In Luv Wit A Stripper,” but it seemed to be a hit at the time.

I’ve sat on this Flo-Rida-“Whistle” joke for so long – initially, it was going to be a part of my stand-up routine, but I ended up nixing it because I came up with something better. That’s going to happen when you only do one show a year, and you’re actually just hosting and only have to tell maybe five jokes. Nonetheless, here we are:

I don’t know why, but this one was so simple – the first line of the song is, “I am still living with your ghost,” so it just came to me – “this is a song about a time I lived with a ghost.” Too easy.

What cracks me up about this one more than trying to do a ridiculous Childish Gambino autotune voice on my own is that I am soaking wet. I had just come in from a summer storm, but didn’t see much reason in changing. It’s funnier if I’m soaking wet, right? Always do it for the comedy…

This is so stupid – but it’s my most watched edition of NMT on YouTube this year. Silly.

This was the first one I really got creative with and took things beyond just shooting a quick clip of me sitting on a bar stool.

Finally, Mose joined me for this one. Not only was it funny, but there was a real behind-the-scenes moment. I fucked up my lines and that was too genuine and raw to cut out. Who says this can’t be art, too?
