Southern Underground Pro: I AM KING Recap

Southern Underground Pro kicked off their 2019 campaign with a barn burner of a show in I AM KING at The Basement East this past Sunday. There was unbelievable hype for this card which translated to an even more electric crowd than usual which is saying something. This felt like a pay per view but like a scrambled PPV that you’d have to play with the antenna to get the signal just right….aka the best kind of PPV.

1. The Production (Derek Direction & Eddy Only) vs. CabanaManceDan (Mance Warner & Cabana Man Dan): We had a Marko Stunt appearance to start the show off and let me say Nashville has missed ‘The Guy.’ Marko wasn’t able to speak too long before he was interrupted by The Production. Thankfully, Mance and Dan weren’t that far behind with chops/flops on their mind allowing Marko to get to safety.

This match was hot hot hot with some excellent tag work from both teams. Derek and Eddy have a style all their own, distasteful tactics aside, that I’m totally here for, baby doll. That said, the story to come out of this match has to be the tandem that is CabanaManceDan. Both loved individually at SUP have now teamed up to create this fun, violent storm that will be hard to beat. Amid a flurry of flop chops, CabanaManceDan moves on after Mance gets the pin on Derek Direction. Dan and Mance move on to the next round in the SUP Tag Title Tournament.

2. SUP Scramble: Scramble matches have become a staple at SUP and I legit look forward to what crazy shit comes from these each show. Yesterday’s lineup of Jaden Newman, Joshua Bishop, Gary Jay, Danny Adams, Graham Bell and Steve Manders was the perfect combination of fuckery for a scramble. Bell brought out a fucking bazooka which had the crowd in a frenzy early. Everyone shined at one point or another but the star had to be Manders. Dude held a grown man over his head with one arm like it was nothing. How do you follow that up? You win the damn match and that’s exactly what Manders after pinning Bishop. Hell of a debut for the Hawkeye.

3. Stokely Hathaway vs. Mr. Brickster: These two had been going back and forth on social media in the weeks leading up and boy were they fired up. Big Stoke surprised us all by coming off the stage on Brick before the match could even get going. Dude even took a DVD off someone’s merch table to smack Brick with. Word is since Stoke used it in a match, the value of said DVD has tripled.

Once we finally did get in the ring, Stoke threw everything he had at Brick. It wouldn’t be enough. Brick does what he do en route to a 1-2-3 and a victory over Big Stoke. Post match, Stokely announced that the Queen of the Dream Team…. Faye Jackson would be at SUP in March with Brickster in her cross hairs. Brick looked shocked, the crowd went crazy and now I’m officially counting down the days until Faye vs. Brick.

4. Allie Kat vs. Savanna Stone: Holy shit what a banger! It’s no secret that we are big Allie Kat fans over at SoBros HQ but I’ve got to shout out Savanna Stone. This was the first time seeing her live and daaaamn did she bring the fight. This may have been the hardest hitting match of the night which says A LOT on this card. Allie Kat gets the tough win and adds another chapter in the short but badass list of SUP women’s matches.

5. Sadkampf (Dominic Garrini & Kevin Ku) vs. The Jollyville Fuck Its (Nasty Russ & T-Money): This was a slugfest through and through. The Sad Bois are known around these parts, but for many, this was the first time seeing the Fuck Its. Nasty Russ and T-Money are rough customers who, as described, don’t give a fuck. Sadly, neither do Sadkampf as the team of Dom and Ku continue to fuck all kinds of shit up under the SUP banner. Ku pins Nasty Russ after a flurry of violence from both Dom & Ku…watch out for Sadkampf in 2019.

6. Dr. Dan vs. O’Shay Edwards: My god the ass beating Dr. Dan took. Don’t get me wrong – Dan was a hit at The Basement East as he tried to motivate and inspire the SUP faithful. Sadly for Dr. Dan…O’Shay came in more than motivated to throw hands. All Damn Day wins via complete domination.

7. Craig Mitchell vs. STAB: We were all on the edge of our seats to see who (or what) had been fucking with Craig Mitchell. After a brief buildup, the mask was removed and none other than Rockin Rivera was revealed!!! The animosity that Craig had built up, essentially, for a faceless enemy boiled over and the two started firing away on one another. Another slugfest here, but that was to be expected with all the bad blood. Craig got the win but by no means did this feel like the end of whatever STAB has/had planned.

8. ‘Warhorse’ Jake Parnell vs. Teddy King: Yo this match started with the crowd chanting “water sucks” followed by the Warhorse drinking like two beers given to him by the SUP faithful. When you’re at the Basement East with SUP, you’re family. Once both athletes were hydrated, shit got cracking. Both of these guys are aces in the ring, leading to some badass sequences along the way where it appeared that Jake was gonna leave Nashville with a big win. That is, until the ref got dropped and Steve Manders entered the fray!

Manders dropped Parnell helping Teddy secure the dub. Jaden Newman stood just as shocked as the rest of us as Teddy cut Jaden from the squad and announced that Steve Manders is now apart of the Varsity team. A lot to take in here but just thinking about the possibility of Parnell vs. Manders has me all kinds of antsy.

9. Bonestorm Championship- Brett Ison (c) vs. Nick Gage: This…this was everything I wanted it to be. Seeing Brett in his ring waiting for Gage as Metallica played was a fucking moment, y’all. Once Gage made his way inside the ring and we got going, it didn’t take long for the ‘Fuck yous’ to start. It also didn’t take long for these two to start beating the shit out of each other all over The Basement East. We had chairs and cookie sheets to go along with a surplus of headbutts.

You know what else we got? Brett hitting a choke breaker…on Nick Fucking Gage…LFG.

The game changing moment came when Brett reversed out of a choke breaker attempt by Gage into a face smashing elbow. The Pitbull hits Street Justice and defeats The King. Post match, O’Shay Edwards came out to square up with Brett (there is SO much history between these two) before being jumped by Sadkampf! Cabana Man Dan and Mr. Brickster hit to help even the odds for O’Shay…it was an absolute madhouse. Jesse comes over the intercom to say ‘fuck all this we’re gonna have a match.’ Mania weekend. Brett/Dom/Ku vs. O’Shay/Dan/Brick. IWTV presents: Family Reunion. This shit is gonna get wild.

Good googly moogly what a show. I want to thank the crew at SUP and all the performers for putting on one of the best/most fun shows I’ve been to in a while. I feel like every SUP show is their best show and this one was no different.Be sure to check it out on IndependentWrestling.tv in the coming weeks. SUP will be back at The Basement East on March 3 and so will we!
