After a ferocious start to the year I was able to catch up with Brett Ison on a hard-earned off weekend. After what transpired at SUP’s I AM KING, and some big match ups on the horizon, ‘The Pitbull’ had plenty to say.
Mose: Now that we’re a couple of weeks out from ‘I Am King’ what are your thoughts on the match with Nick Gage?
Brett Ison: Gage and myself was something that actually happened in 2019. I remember taking a shower after the show. I said out loud “I just wrestled Nick fucking Gage in 2019” and I won. The match was intense from the time I walked out the curtain, to the bell hitting on Metallica’s song to the brawl, chairs, everything. It was special.
M:There’s a lot to cover from the post match goings on. Are you and O’Shay Edwards destined to fight forever? What is the history with you, Dominic Garrini, and Kevin Ku? Your thoughts on the ‘Mania weekend matchup with Shay, Mr. Brickster, and Cabana Man Dan?
BI: Me and Shay understand business. Whether it’s in the street, an office, or in the ring. We understand that when two dogs have one bone to fight over, there is only that one bone and only one dog can have it. And as history has it, when me and Shay met the first time we tagged. The second time, we faced each other as friends in a friendly exhibition. Third time, we took out what was left The Carnies and AJ Gray. Fourth, I grabbed the crown and I knew as soon as I won, the crosshairs were set on me from anyone and everyone. Including Shay.
I just did the same thing he would have. We are so much alike.. you guys just don’t know. He even said he would have done the same thing. We both know we have to fight and it’s going to boil over sooner than people realize.
On Ku/Dominic-
BI: They understand my struggle.
Mania Matchup-
BI: After I’m done with Shay, if Ku and Dom leave me any scraps, I will clean the plate that is Brick and Dan. Their Wrestlemania weekend memories will be blurry because I’m bringin’ blunt force trauma.
M: You’ve got quite the weekend coming up with Michael Elgin on Feb. 8 and Chip Day on Feb 10. How are you feeling going into two very different matchups?
On Michael Elgin-
BI: I took his seminar back in like…2015. I got to work with him and got a view into how his mind works. It’s a big test for me in the strength department, but a test I’m looking to pass.
On Chip Day-
BI: He is one guy that I’ve just been a fan of since I met him. Once again, training with someone of his caliber was dope. Getting to learn from people that are better than you (at the time) and he still may be. This one will be my elbows vs Chip’s kicks.
M: With so many check marks already lined up what would you say your goals are in 2019?
BI: First and foremost, I want Eddie Kingston. I WANT KINGSTON! The man is someone I look up to. I don’t know him personally, but I believe we are kindred spirits in a way. He is raw. He’s real.
The SCI Tournament is something I have my eyes set on. I want in. I don’t care if I’m invited or if I have to fuck someone up to get in. I’ve earned the right to be in, but no one has approached me yet. A mistake. Right now, Tennessee is my territory. I defend the name and state of TN wrestling – I am legit. I don’t have to tell you. Other people will. I let my work and others speak for me. I don’t command respect, but it is given to me. Maybe it’s genuine maybe it’s out of fear.
M: Anything else you’d like to say?
BI: 2019 is fucked.
