Building the Perfect WrestleMania Card

Four years ago (holy shit – have I really been writing about the WWE for that long?), I took some of the worst matches in WrestleMania history and put them together to build the absolute worst WrestleMania ever. In that same guise, I decided (again, four years later – wtf took so long, Stoney?) to take some of the better matches in show history in an effort to build the perfect WrestleMania card. So, here we are.

The Perfect WrestleMania

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (WrestleMania X) – It is the single greatest opening contest in WrestleMania history. Hands down. Period. No questions asked. No better way to get the crowd hot right away.

Extreme Rules: Mick Foley vs. Edge (WrestleMania 22) – Every good WrestleMania card has to have a little spice…a little….edge, if you will. This match was the perfect big-stage version of the ‘Extreme Rules’ gimmick.

WWF Tag Team Championship: Money Inc. vs. The Mega Maniacs (WrestleMania IX) – WrestleMania needs some good tag team action, and it needs the star power of Hogan. Gotta work him into the card somehow.

Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania XIX) – A hot feud and one of the more underrated matches in WrestleMania history in my book. We’ve had a good technical match, a flaming table, and Hogan posing all over the ring. Time to get back into more drama drama.

Randy Orton vs. Seth Rollins (WrestleMania 31) – A deeply personal match-up for the rivals, but one that was fun as hell for the fans. It was loaded with fun spots. The perfect match to pace the action without having the quality of the show suffer.

Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker (WrestleMania XXX) – I get it. The match wasn’t all that great. But, it created one of if not the most iconic WrestleMania moment of all time. Stunned silence in the Superdome when The Streak was broken – I want that moment on my perfect WrestleMania.

Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon (WrestleMania 34) – The audience needs to cool off a bit, but like I mentioned in the blurb about Orton-Rollins, I don’t want to sacrifice quality on the perfect WrestleMania. This match is the quintessential WrestleMania spirit encapsulated in match form. And, it’s fun as hell, baby.

Intercontinental Championship: “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs. Ricky “The Dragon Steamboat (WrestleMania III) – Easily the best Intercontinental Championship match in WrestleMania history, and I am a firm believer in solid one-on-one match-ups for the secondary titles. We’re going back-to-back-to-back thrillers to close the show.

Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch (WrestleMania 32) – The best Women’s Championship match in WrestleMania history deserves to co-main. That simple.

WWF Championship: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock (WrestleMania X-Seven) – One of the greatest rivalries of all time. One of the greatest ‘Mania main events of all time. You have Austin’s status as perhaps the greatest WWF Champion of all time. Plus, there’s The Rock’s popularity. I mean, this one just made sense to me. I started with Bret-Owen and Austin-Rock and filled in the gaps in between. This is the cornerstone of the perfect WrestleMania in my book.

I’m not sure if the ‘big five’ concept is alive or dead (will be exploring in a later piece), but from a marketing standpoint, I say going into this show, my ‘big five’ are Austin-Rock, Banks-Flair-Lynch, Lesnar-Undertaker, Money Inc.-Mega Maniacs, and Angle & Rousey vs. Triple H and Steph.

Take a stab at it, guys. Send me your perfect WrestleMania card, and I’ll publish it in this article.
