Welcome in to the SEC Roundup here on SoBros Network. Each week, we’ll take you through the headlines of the Southeastern Conference – we’re planning to stick to football, but who knows where this thing will take us? Buckle up and stay tuned. LFG.

SEC ROUNDUP: March 7TH, 2019

Alright, y’all – we’re into March, and that can mean only one thing. Spring football is in the air, baby! We’re a little more than three weeks away from the first SEC spring game, so all of us SEC content creators are getting our spring storylines in order. It finally feels like we’re starting to put the 2018 season completely in the rear view, and it’s full steam ahead towards 2019. Let’s hit this week’s high points!

Spring football approaching

An awful lot has transpired since season’s end, but we’re finally at a point where we’re going to start seeing these sub-plots play out. I love spring football, particularly when it’s actually spring. If it’d go on and warm up, yeah, that’d be great.

Okay, I’m ranting – the spring calendar is quickly approaching. First up, the Vanderbilt Commodores host their spring game on March 30th. The spring games continue all the way until the Georgia Bulldogs wrap up the spring slate on April 20th. Find your team’s schedule and television info here. Every game is going to be broadcast on some form of ESPN or the SEC Network.

D.K. Metcalf taking the NFL Combine by storm

Former Ole Miss wideout D.K. Metcalf has taken the NFL world by storm the last week or so. He’s shooting up draft boards and could end up being the first wide receiver taken in the NFL Draft. Killed it at the Scouting Combine and all that, but he damn near went viral for this photo surfacing:

That ain’t right, man. That’s like ‘The Total Package’ Lex Luger ripped. That’s that can’t-possibly-be-healthy body fat ratio.

Nonetheless, Metcalf looks like he’s jacked and could kick my ass with a flick.

Nick Starkel transferring to Arkansas

Per FanSided:

Nick Starkel announced his intention to transfer from Texas A&M in January, and on Monday night he announced on Twitter that he’s headed to Arkansas.

Starkel was Texas A&M’s starting quarterback start the 2017 season, but a broken ankle in the season opener sidelined him until the final four games.

He ended that season on a high note, with 499 passing  yards in a bowl game loss to Wake Forest, but he lost the starting job to Kellen Mond and played in just five games last season.

Starkel is scheduled to graduate from Texas A&M in a few months, so he’ll be eligible immediately as a grad transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Pretty interesting move here for both parties, Starkel and Arkansas. Chad Morris just got grad transfer Ben Hicks from SMU and I can’t help but wonder how Starkel is going to fit into that Razorbacks offense. Should make for an interesting spring, but I don’t know how this one pans out come time for the season to start.

Tua Tagovailoa is the Heisman favorite for 2019

Courtesy of ESPN:

Despite being outplayed by Clemson counterpart Trevor Lawrence in the national championship game, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the offseason betting favorite to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook released opening odds that put Tagovailoa as the favorite at 5-2, just ahead of Lawrence at 3-1.

I wouldn’t have guessed that after the way the season ended for Tagovailoa. Would’ve thought it was going to be all systems go on Lawrence heading into the 2019 campaign. I don’t really understand what you’d

The Auburn quarterback battle

Is there a better quarterback competition in the entire SEC than the one at Auburn going into this season? I mean, you have dual threat true freshman Bo Nix, who’s probably the most explosive guy – long-term, I don’t think there’s any question that he’s the guy. But, is he ready for 2019? I don’t know.

Joey Gatewood and Cord Sandberg are going to be in the race. Then, you have junior Malik Willis, who is the most experienced of the bunch and probably the favorite to get the nod in the spring. But, I don’t think it’s a spot he’ll hold onto for long. My guess is Nix ends up being the guy.
