It wasn’t even technically the first day of NFL free agency, and the Tennessee Titans had a couple of big moves to announce. Good thing, too – if I had had to read another asinine Titans Twitter take about how the 2019 season was already over because the Titans didn’t give Landon Collins $30M a year, I was going to throw myself off of my balcony.
“What is wrong with this team?!?!? Same old Titans! They’re not even reportedly interested in any of these players! Same old Titans!”
Y’all know the drill. Anyway, a couple of big deals getting done for the Titans.
Kenny Vaccaro
First of all, they announced that they re-signed Kenny Vaccaro for four years at $26M, with $11.5M guaranteed. They also made the release of Johnathan Cyprien official in the process. Vaccaro is the guy moving forward. Cyp’s going to have a market, but given how well Vaccaro played in 2018, he really forced their hand here. The contract Vaccaro is getting is pretty similar to Cyprien’s, so it’s essentially a wash when considering cap space.
Verdict: Love it. The path Vaccaro took to get to this contract is pretty wild, but he fits in so well with the Titans. I thought for sure he would test the market, but then again, part of the reason he held out of offers last preseason was because he wanted to find the right fit. So, maybe he just likes playing in this defense? This essentially eliminates safety as a need. Now, it’s time to get that deal with Kevin Byard done.
Adam Humphries
Humphries will apparently sign a four year, $36M deal tomorrow (3/13/19). Last year, he tallied 76 receptions for 816 yards and five touchdowns for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. He played in a LOADED receiving corps alongside Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson, where he stood out as primarily a slot guy. It sounds like the Titans outbid the New England Patriots, who wanted to bring in Humphries to start opposite Julian Edelman. I assume, given the kind of money he’s getting, that he will start opposite Corey Davis.
Verdict: Lukewarm – I love the idea of surrounding Marcus Mariota with steady guys, and I love his propensity for converting third downs. But, 4yr/$36M? That’s a lot. And, I can’t help but wonder how Humphries will perform in an offense that isn’t built to air it out. I thought $8M a year was too expensive for the guy. Time will tell.
