WrestleMania Season Roundup: Knockoff Diamond Cutter Edition

Welcome to the WrestleMania Season Roundup! Over the next four weeks, I’m going to take a look around the landscape of the WWE and – you guessed it – round up all the news and updates as to how the show is shaping up. LFG.

WrestleMania Season Roundup: March 14, 2019

  • Fastlane was a fun show. Not a lot of great wrestling, but it felt like a really good episode of Raw/SmackDown. A lot of wheels were set into motion for WrestleMania between the Shane McMahon heel turn, Becky Lynch being added to the main event, and
  • From the way Raw started Monday night, it would appear as though Drew McIntyre is being positioned as Roman Reigns‘ WrestleMania opponent. Hate to see McIntyre eat the L, but that should be a great match if that’s the case.
  • Bobby Lashley is the Intercontinental Champion again as WWE keeps playing hot potato with the strap. With no clear direction for the IC title scene, it seems likely we’re destined for a multi-man match of some sort on the big stage.
  • Triple H vs. Batista is now official and will be a No Holds Barred Match. Fuck yes. Count me in.
  • Alexa Bliss is going to be the host for WrestleMania 35. *shrugs*
  • Harlem Heat was announced for the Hall of Fame – awesome choice. I raised some eyebrows when I mentioned Booker T and Stevie Ray as one of the five greatest tag teams of all time, but I was a huge Harlem Heat fan as a kid. As weird as it is to say, they are probably one of the biggest reasons I started watching WCW to begin with.
  • Kurt Angle announced he’s going to have a retirement match at WrestleMania…kinda knew that was coming, but now it’s official.
  • I wasn’t on board with the idea of Randy Orton vs. A.J. Styles at WrestleMania at first, but the two delivered a FIRE promo on Tuesday night that has me rethinking that – the angle they’re taking is Orton’s “silver spoon” vs. Styles’ indie scene success. At one point, Styles dropped, “you never would’ve made it in my world with nothing but this pose (Orton pose)….*dramatic pose* …..and a knockoff diamond cutter.”
  • It sure looks like we could be heading towards an UsosHardy Boyz match at ‘Mania, given how Jimmy and Jey mentioned them in their backstage promo on SmackDown Tuesday night. I’d much rather see that than a jumbled mess of five teams going at it at once, but a multi-team match is the rumor for now.
  • The IIconics called out Sasha Banks and Bayley on SmackDown – have a feeling we’re heading towards some type of WrestleMania Fatal 4-Way for the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
  • #KofiMania is still alive as Vince McMahon announced a way for Kofi Kingston to earn a shot at the WWE Championship at WrestleMania – he just has to defeat Orton, Samoa Joe, The Bar, and Rowan in a gauntlet match next week on SmackDown.
  • No credible source for this, but I hope we get a big time U.S. Championship match between Samoa Joe and John Cena. Though, rumors floated out this week that Cena could be Angle’s partner for his retirement match.
