Matches I Do and Don’t Want to See at WrestleMania 35

Well, hundreds of people read this piece last year so I guess I gotta do it again, huh? For the people who weren’t here for WrestleMania 34, all I’m going to do is run down some of the matches confirmed or rumored for WrestleMania 35, and I’ll weigh in on whether I’m for it or against it. That simple.

This year, things feel quite different. There’s so much that still feels completely up in the air. Roman Reigns is back and healthy enough to compete – he’ll be teaming with The Shield at Fastlane, but there’s no clear path for him after that.

John Cena is supposed to wrestle at the show, but has yet to return to WWE television this WrestleMania season. He was slated to take on Lars Sullivan, but those plans have fallen through and no one really seems to know what’s going on with Sullivan. No sign of Cena, and we have less than a month to go before the big show.

News on the Undertaker changes from week to week. One minute, he’s in for ‘Mania. The next, he’s not. Regardless, there don’t seem to be any plans set in place for the Dead Man.

There’s no clear contender for SmackDown Women’s Champion, Asuka. Sasha Banks and Bayley figure to defend the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against some team. So, it thins the pool of contenders a little bit.

This is the first year in a long time that things have been this wide open. Hell, things may have never been this wide open heading into WrestleMania. Let’s dive in.

Rumored WrestleMania 35 Card

Do

Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey – One of the three (all but officially) confirmed matches for the show, and yeah, I’m in. Lynch is arguably your most popular superstar right now. Rousey is a draw. And, Flair has the main event pedigree. It should be a fantastic contest, and should close the show. No complaints here.

Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins – I know a lot of folks wanted to see Lesnar drop the title at the Royal Rumble, but I actually think this match with Rollins was the call to make. Lesnar always has better matches with the smaller guys, and Rollins had a hell of a 2018. He deserves the marquee match-up, and this one should deliver.

Triple H vs. Batista – I was always a big Batista guy and thought his feud with Triple H was among the best work of his career. I get the whole, “yeah, but they’ve already done it” angle, but personally, I’m happy to see Batista back in the WWE, no matter who he’s facing. He’s such a good villain, and the angle with Ric Flair’s birthday celebration was fucking perfect.

Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston – It just seems like the right call to make given the momentum of #KofiMania. Plus, you already have your big time title fight in Lesnar-Rollins. You can afford to give this slot to Kofi and make for one hell of a feel-good story. These two put on a banger inside the Elimination Chamber, so you know one on one, this would be a good one.

Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio – I know, I know – it’s already been done, too. But, if this is how you’re going to retire Angle, why not put him in there with a guy you know he can make magic with? No big convoluted story necessary – just two of the all-time greats putting on a show.

The Usos vs. The Hardy Boyz – Last week, Matt Hardy shocked the WWE Universe when he returned to action by his brother’s side. It looks like The Hardy Boyz are back, so maybe we can get a title fight between two of the WWE’s elite teams in history. I’d be for it.

John Cena vs. Drew McIntyre – What on Earth do you do with Cena at this point? Are they still holding out for Sullivan to return or what? If he’s going to put anyone over, I’d go with McIntyre. I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to a Cena-Lashley match or Cena-Samoa Joe, but at one point, McIntyre was rumored to be Cena’s partner, and that could be the win that catapults him to the Universal Championship picture.

Don’t

Randy Orton vs. A.J. Styles – Orton just doesn’t move the needle for me anymore. Sure, he and Styles could deliver a quality match, but I’d rather see Styles in a different program.

Shane McMahon vs. The Miz – Just because it’s a big pay-per-view, it doesn’t mean McMahon has to wrestle, right? Or, is this just one of the inevitable laws of wrestling? One thing’s for sure – this one’s going to have a drawn-out story behind it.

Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena – It was rumored at one point, but is looking less and less likely with each Raw and Smackdown that passes. For good reason, too – just don’t think anyone really wins coming out of this match-up. What does it really accomplish? Unless you’re giving Cena his record 17th WWE Championship.

Asuka vs. Lacey Evans – Do I know who on Earth Asuka should face? No. It’s a total mess, but right now, the leader in the clubhouse is Evans, who’s been rumored to challenge Asuka for a while now. I’d rather see Asuka-Natalya, Asuka-Ember Moon, or even Asuka-Ruby Riott before Asuka-Evans. I’m just not typically all about people coming in and going after the title right away.

Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin – I don’t know where this rumor even came from, but I would be so out on this match, especially if ‘Mania is supposed to be Angle’s retirement match.

Undertaker – at all. Sorry.
