New York Giants Draft Needs (2019)

Is it weird for the Nashville bois to cover New York Giants draft needs? Probably. But, let me explain myself. First of all, I love football. I love covering teams – that’s why I do what I do, plain and simple. You could hand me the New Mexico State Aggies and be like, “break down their schedule,” and I’d do it in a heartbeat. Second of all, the SoBros First Lady is from New Jersey and a big time Giants family. So, they’re practically my NFC team. That’s why I make sure to cover them every year with draft needs, draft grades, season previews, etc. even though no one reads them.

Cool, huh?

Anyway, the Giants are in an absolutely horrible position. Can you draft a new GM? Because Dave Gettleman is NOT getting rave reviews in New York. He’s traded away a ton of talent and drawn criticism for essentially approaching the 2018 offseason like they were only a few pieces away from Super Bowl contention…..when in reality, they needed a complete rebuild. Like, “blow the whole fuckin’ thing up” kinda rebuild.

Now, a year later, and the Giants have been moving pieces so fervently that I don’t even know who’s left standing in the room. The Giants have been loyal (maybe to a fault) to Eli Manning, but it’s time to start looking for the new cornerstone of this offense. Then, build out the trenches. Then, you can stockpile talent at the skill positions. Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram provide two promising key pieces to the offense, but it won’t mean much if you can’t protect the quarterback and you don’t have weapons that can draw defenders out of the box.

I mean, this franchise needs as thorough a rebuild as you could possibly get. Thankfully, all the wheeling and dealing has led to the Giants having 12 picks in next week’s draft. Let’s hope they don’t screw this up – on to the draft needs.

Quarterback

It starts at quarterback for me. This class doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence from the national media outside of Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins, but I think there’s real value to be had in a Drew Lock or Will Grier. Specifically, Lock has all of the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. A lot of the issues that are keeping him from being in the discussion with the top two of this class are fixable if he finds the right situation.

New York would be the perfect situation for him. The Giants are going to be loyal to Manning for at least another year, so Lock would get a chance to develop under a Hall of Famer. They could use the 6th overall pick on a value more suitable for the selection and likely grab the quarterback of the future at #17. That said, there are some folks out there who think Lock could sneak in to the top 10. Regardless, the Giants can’t waste time in finding the next foundation of the franchise.

Right Tackle

They need a starter….period. You have a pretty formidable LT and LG combo in Nate Solder and Will Hernandez. I was pretty vocally supportive of both of those acquisitions last offseason. I like the addition of Kevin Zeitler. But at right tackle? You might as well put a crash test dummy in there. No offense, of course. But, drafting a guy like Cody Ford at #17 would instantly give the Giants a legitimate offensive line (at least from a talent perspective).

Wide Receiver

Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard are the likely starters right now, but my God. The Giants need a play-maker not named Barkley or Engram. I love Tate, but I don’t think he’s going to carry an offense in 2019. The Giants need that game-changer in the receiving corps.

Safety

Jabrill Peppers does not equal Landon Collins. He’s a solid starter and has potential to grow into a good safety, but he’s not enough to carry the unit. They need a starter.

Cornerback

I keep catching myself saying, “they need a starter.” That’s just indicative of how dire the situation is right now. Eli Apple was sold in the fire sale. Right now, who’s going to start opposite Janoris Jenkins? They. Need. A. Starter.

Defensive line

If they can get their starting RT early, they can invest heavily in building depth along the defensive line. I’m a fan of Dalvin Tomlinson (Roll Tide), but they need bodies. They need talent, and they need competition.

The Giants have TWELVE PICKS in this year’s NFL Draft:

  • Round 1: 6th overall
  • Round 1: 17th overall
  • Round 2: 37th overall
  • Round 3: 95th overall
  • Round 4: 108th overall
  • Round 4: 132nd overall
  • Round 5: 142nd overall
  • Round 5: 143rd overall
  • Round 5: 171st overall
  • Round 6: 180th overall
  • Round 7: 232nd overall
  • Round 7: 245th overall
