The 2019 NFL Draft takes place April 25-27 this year, emanating LIVE from right here in Nashville, Tennessee. As it stands, the Tennessee Titans have one first round draft pick. General manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel currently hold the 19th overall selection. Over the next few weeks, your boy “Big Natural” Stoney Keeley will be taking a look at some of the prospects who are either rumored to be tied to or who make sense for the Titans.
Here we are – the conclusion of my 2019 series of guys who could be in play for the Titans at #19. I feel like if I type “the Titans need pass rush help – doesn’t matter where it comes from” one more time, my brain is going to explode. But, to me, that’s the central issue with this franchise heading into the 2019 NFL Draft. There’s a plethora of EDGE specialists in this draft – but what if there’s a run on ’em? What if teams start reaching for quarterbacks, receivers, and cornerbacks and a guy like Ed Oliver slips to the Titans at #19?
Oliver’s been making headlines ever since he became one of the first five-star high school recruits ever to sign with a ‘Group of Five’ program (Houston). Mostly for his stellar play, but also things like fighting his head coach over a jacket, NBD. Dude earned first-team All-American honors as a TRUE FRESHMAN. He won a bunch of trophies, and even got some damn Heisman love from some people last season. I mean, dude’s as accomplished as they come. He’s the most accomplished guy I’ve written about this year.
His explosiveness and his athleticism is ungodly, other-worldly, elite, rare – whatever you want to call it. It’s the type of explosiveness and athleticism you don’t see too often out of a defensive tackle. He’s got a low center of gravity, which allows him to gain leverage on his opponents. He’s high-motor and efficient with his hands. I mean, this guy is a premium disruptor who would be a consensus top five pick if not for his 2018 injury and “attitude concerns.” Hell, he may STILL end up a top five pick tonight.
But, at just 6’2″ and 287, some scouts are worried that NFL size might bite him in the ass. That the game might catch up to him when everyone’s as fast and athletic as he is.
The Titans don’t need beef, though. They need speed. They need disruptors. Oliver fits that bill, and alongside Jurrell Casey, he could make for quite the menace. Personally, I don’t think there’s a chance in hell Oliver gets past #14, but if he did slip to #19, it’s a no-brainer for me, dawg.
