Alright, now that we’re settling back into the routine, it’s time to start reflecting on the week that was. Mose already released his top 10 WrestleMania week matches earlier this week. Now, it’s my turn.
One thing I learned about myself last week is that I love comedy wrestling. I don’t think I ever stopped to think about it. But, it’s definitely the stuff that gets my gears turning the most, and that’s one thing that the indie scene does infinitely better than the larger promotions in the world. A couple of honorable mentions off the top of my head are the Orange Cassidy–Taka Michinoku match and Invisible Man vs. Invisible Stan from Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, Pt. 1 last Friday Night.
I should also preface this piece by saying last week was a drunken blur, and I don’t even remember all of the shows that I attended or watched. So, before you reach out telling me I forgot this or overlooked that, just know I either haven’t seen it yet, or don’t remember it well enough to make a fair assessment. Transparency, y’all. That’s what we do. That said, Black Label Pro’s Adventures In Wrestling was clearly the show of the week, in my opinion.
One last caveat – I took Southern Underground Pro’s six-man tag match from IWTV’s Family Reunion off my list. It was undoubtedly my favorite match of the week. The story leading to that match, and the match itself were both phenomenal. Just feels a little biased of me – is it possible for a writer to have a home promotion? I don’t know – but I know the SUP faithful brought East Nashville to the White Eagle Hall and those guys stole the show.
Stoney’s Top 10 WrestleMania Week Matches
10. Action Championship: A.C. Mack vs. Fred Yehi (IWTV Family Reunion) – Such a classic throwback to the Southern style of wrestling. I love everything about A.C. Mack as the slimy champion, and Yehi is as proven as they come. Felt like I should’ve been battling the humidity of a Georgia summer to take this one in.
9. Joey Janela vs. Jungle Boy (Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, Pt. 2) – The pure raw emotion of Jungle Boy’s return was enough to make his performances this weekend memorable, but defeating the Bad Boy on the Spring Break stage was particularly special. The bout was a phenomenal display of athleticism, and Jungle Boy is a dude to watch in 2019.
8. 5 O’Clock Somewhere Drunken Match: Session Moth Martina vs. Spyder Nate Webb (GCW Orange Cassidy Is Doing Something or Whatever, Who Knows???) – This one went to a double drunken pass out, but I honestly think it was the best comedy match of the week, and that’s saying something. I was rolling with laughter watching this one in the airport on the way back to Nashville.
7. Sadkampf vs. Manny Fernandez & Tank (BLP Adventures in Wrestling) – Holy shit, what a rollercoaster – Tank and Manny putting skewers in feet and butt cheeks perfectly exemplifies the fun type of brutality this one was.
6. Jonathan Gresham vs Shigehiro Irie (BLP Adventures in Wrestling) – I don’t know how such impactful, physical wrestling can appear so smooth and effortless, but that’s exactly what this felt like.
5. Nick gage vs. Swoggle (BLP Adventures in Wrestling) – You know what? Let’s give Swoggle some fuckin’ credit. Dude showed up and took a beating at the hands of Gage. This match had no business being as good as it was, plain and simple.
4. Joey Janela vs. Marko Stunt (Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, Pt. 1) – The double return that kicked off Spring Break! The action was fast, dynamic, and even though Marko busted his face up, it was the perfect match for both guys to return with.
3. BLP Championship: Ethan Page vs. Kobe Durst (BLP Adventures in Wrestling) – Street Fight rules here, ladies and gentlemen. You know shit’s going down when the guys pull out the jeans to fight in. This was physical, brutal mayhem – I still have the image of Durst gracefully falling out of the sky onto a trash can engrained in my brain.
2. Independent Wrestling Championship: Orange Cassidy vs. Jonathan Gresham (IWTV’s Family Reunion) – This was my first look at Cassidy, and I’m completely sold. Hitch the wagon to this guy. From the flute intro to the refusal of MJF’s championship challenge, it was pure gold. But, the way his style meshed with Gresham’s was something intriguing and made for one of the most entertaining matches of the week.
1.LAX vs. The Rock N Roll Express (Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, Pt. 2) – Wow. Just wow. I mean, Spring Break has a reputation for being a fun show, and when you read “LAX vs. Rock N Roll Express” in 2019, you probably laugh. Then, these guys show up and put on a match that I imagine I’ll be looking back at in December when compiling my ‘Match of the Year’ list. Ricky Morton hitting a Canadian Destroyer was the wrestling highlight of the week.
