Ladies and gentlemen, today we are gathered to talk about Alabama.
No, I’m not talking about the Crimson Tide football team and their dynasty of championships under Nick Saban and Bear Bryant. I have no qualms with that Alabama. I’m not even talking about the state of Alabama, as there are certainly parts of it that are beautiful and the people are lovely.
We’re going to talk about the band, and their 1997 hit “Dancin’, Shaggin’ on the Boulevard.”
Editor’s note: Why does that song feel so much older than 22 years old? Like, I thought that shit was written in the 80s.
Anyway, join me as we look at the sociological impact that that song had on our youth of the 1990s. Let’s look beyond the lyrics to find the secret meaning of just what this song was meant to convey. Hint: it’s people fuckin’ in the streets.
Do y’all not know what “shagging” means? In today’s boycott society, I think it’s high time we add Alabama to the list of things that need a good boycottin’.
