Nashville Reviews: Brothers’ Burger Joint

The debate over the best burger in Nashville is always a good one. Brothers’ Burger Joint has long been a strong recommendation from my social circle, so I decided to finally make the trip out to Berry Hill to see what all the fuss is about. My girlfriend and I had a delightful lunch on an eerily comfortable June day last Friday.

Brothers’ Burger Joint actually started as a food truck in 2015 before opening in the blossoming Berry Hill neighborhood in 2017. You can read more about their story here.

My girlfriend got the fried chicken po’ boy and my GOD was that some good ass chicken. I went with the Jumpback Jack burger – candied bacon, caramelized onions, fresh jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, and a cumin aioli that certainly had me cumin if you know what I mean. We both ordered fries as a side, but I tacked on an additional side of cole slaw because I’m a big time cole slaw guy even though I couldn’t tell you what my favorite cole slaw in town is.

Real quick – that cumin joke was juvenile and I’m ashamed of myself, but it was too frickin’ easy I couldn’t help myself. Check out my thoughts and ratings just below the food pics. Check out the full menu at Brothers’ Burger Joint here.

Food Pics

My full meal – burger, fries, cole slaw, and all.
A close-up of the Jumpback Jack.
Takin’ a peek under the hood.
Fresh bread, fresh pickles, fresh chicken – I’d put this po’boy against any po’boy in town.

Ratings

Food: 6.5/10 – The burger alone is probably close to an 8/10 on the burger scale. If I’m only grading the burger, it’s in Nashville’s elite category. But, I wasn’t a fan of the slaw, and the fries were a little dry and flavorless. My girlfriend couldn’t finish the fried chicken po’ boy, so I did the honors, and like the burger, it belongs in Nashville’s elite category. Maybe I should just make a meal out of a burger and po’ boy and skip the sides altogether next time?!?!

Booze: 6.5/10 – Didn’t have any brews or booze for lunch, but I did scope out the bar and their selection really does live up to the “great selection of local craft beer, on tap and canned or bottled” claim on their menu.

Value: 5/10 – Two meals, one with an extra side, a water, and an unsweet tea ran me $40 with a tip. That’s steep for lunch, and I would hardly call it value. And, the service was absolutely excellent, so you should plan to tip well (or else you’re just an asshole). Still, that’s kinda Nashville these days, y’know? So, I’m not going dock their value score below average, considering this is par for the course in the Music City in 2019.

Atmosphere: 7/10 – Honestly, aside from the burger itself, this was my favorite aspect of Brothers’ Burger Joint. It certainly helps that it was an unusually cool June day when we went and sat outside, but overall, the location is laid back and friendly. You’re out of the hustle and bustle of Nashville, but still getting a quality meal. The service was great. Everyone was nice. Parking could be a bit of a pain (we got there right as the doors opened at 11AM), but all in all, this seems like the perfect spot to go unwind, have a beer or two, a damn good burger, and forget about the grind for a little bit.

Overall: 6.25/10 – I like it! I wanted to really really like it, but if I’m being honest, I just didn’t leave saying “WOW!” I aim to try the jambalaya next time instead of fries and see if that changes the food score at all. Passing grade from this degenerate Nashville writer, though.

Where would I put it in my rotation of restaurants? I’d say it fits a nice role as that place you go when work is a little laid back and you can get away with a long lunch. Also, seems like the place to stop by and have a pint and a burger on your way from work. It’s a cool hangout spot with one of the best burgers in town.
