As if downtown Nashville couldn’t get any weirder, reports are surfacing this morning that tech giant Apple now has their sights set on a storefront downtown in the Music City. I have questions.
Courtesy of the Nashville Post:
An official with Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc., when contacted Thursday, said the company has made no announcement regarding a store at the Fifth + Broadway location. But the Post has learned the global company will take what is perhaps the most visible retail space — and likely the most high-profile space, period — within the multi-building mixed-use development.
Hey, shout out to the Nashville Post for getting the big time scoop on this. But, this just sounds weird to a guy who has grown up in Nashville. Part of me still has the ‘you don’t go downtown unless you’re looking for drugs or a hooker’ ingrained in my psyche. Part of me has evolved with the city and now I think, “Broadway is for puking in the street at midnight.” But, having an Apple store down there? This is the last straw. This is our beloved city achieving tourist mecca nirvana.
I mean, can you imagine….actually shopping on Broadway??? What a foreign concept. There’s not supposed to be anything to do downtown except drink and watch live music.
This Fifth + Broadway thing sounded crazy to begin with – like, “y’all are going to put actual stores down on Broadway? Not just gift shops? I thought only bars and restaurants were allowed on Broadway. Oh, and Kinko’s.” But, then, they tore down an entire corner of the business. I’m no expert, but I don’t think that’s how construction works.
Now, we get word that Apple could be coming to town, and it all makes sense. We have Apple Cool Springs and Apple Green Hills. Now, it’s Apple Nashville. Really, it’s also a mark of downtown finally catching up with the other elite neighborhoods in the mid-state. So, the city should be proud of that.
And, all of the bachelorettes who run into problems with their iPhones won’t have to worry about missing out on memories altogether. Now, if someone chucks their phone into the Cumberland, all they have to do is stumble up a few blocks to get a new one.
Nashville, with this news, I’m ready to say it – we’ve arrived.
