Tank the 401k: All In on A.J. Brown’s ROTY Odds

It ain’t quite time for the ol’ betting column to make a full time comeback, but we’ve got a special edition of Tank the 401k today talkin’ Offensive Rookie of the Year odds for 2019.

The Tennessee Titans invested a second round draft pick in former Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown. Given the current state of the Titans receiving corps, Brown’s going to be one of the most-watched players this summer as the Titans get set for the 2019 season.

And, for good reason, the Titans needed an overhaul of talent in the receiving corps. Guys that could just plain catch the ball and not drop game-winning touchdowns and such.

Brown is a potential stud. And, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, he’s at least in the discussion for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

33/1, are you kidding me? I’d take that bet in a heartbeat.

Here in a few weeks, when it’s legal to bet on sports in the state of Tennessee, I just may put my money where my mouth is. But, Brown at 33/1 is a steal – to quote my man Rick Merritt, “bet 100 to win 3300.”

When calculating something like this, you have to factor in opportunity in a major way. Brown has the opportunity to play right away, and there aren’t many threats to his position. Corey Davis should still be this team’s #1, but the Titans will be looking for a guy to start opposite him. The addition of Adam Humphries and the return of Delanie Walker will effect his potential numbers, but all in all, there’s room for a guy like Brown to have an explosive rookie season.

The biggest thing going against him is the Titans’ propensity to run the ball. He might not post ROTY type numbers simply by virtue of the offense that he plays in.

But, how many fellow rookies have the same sort of opportunity in front of them? Kyler Murray is obviously the favorite, and should play from the jump. But, what if he stinks? I like T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant in their respective offenses. How many tight ends win ROTY, though? Josh Jacobs and Miles Sanders both figure to be in running-back-by-committee situations. And, the Baltimore Ravens might throw twice a game, making it hard for Marquise Brown to post numbers.

So, I’m rolling the dice on Brown at 33/1. LFG.
