Over the course of the next several weeks, the SoBros Network crew will be going team-by-team through the SEC, previewing the upcoming American tackle football season. Up next, the 2019 Texas A&M preview!

2019 Texas A&M Preview

Coming off a nine-win season in his inaugural year with the Aggies, Jimbo Fisher has College Staton fired up for year two. Kellen Mond will look to become a top quarterback in the SEC after a 3,000 yard, 24 touchdown (he added seven touchdowns with his feet) season. He’ll have a solid receiving corps as well as a pretty dependable offensive line. The running back position is without a doubt the biggest question mark. There’s simply no way you just replace the production of Trayveon Williams, but Jashaun Corbin is gonna do his damnedest. He averaged 5.7 yards a carry in relief of Williams last season, but will be asked to do much more this year.

The defense only returns four starters from last year, so the hope of this squad repeating as a top three defense against the run is slim. This wasn’t a very good pass defense last season, so the there’s plenty of room to grow. I’m just not sure that we’re gonna see a big turnaround this season. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the front seven play pretty consistently, but the secondary give up a few too many big plays. Sound familiar?

2019 Aggies Schedule

8/31 vs. Texas St- Look for Mond to put up some BIG numbers in a season opening win.

9/7 @ Clemson- A&M played Clemson closer than anybody last season in College Station a year ago. Not so sure this one is as close with Clemson at home and with Trevor Lawrence doing Trevor Lawrence things.

9/14 vs. Lamar- Aggies get back in the win column.

9/21 vs. Auburn- A loss to Auburn was probably the low point for Jimbo in Year 1. Aggies will be looking for (and getting) some revenge.

9/28 vs. Arkansas (in Arlington)- A&M should push for a 2-0 start in the SEC thanks to getting a less than great Arkansas team. This one always seems to be a bit fluky, but I’m riding with Mond to play well.

10/12 vs. Alabama- Tough when you’re looking at playing both teams from  the national title game last year in the first six weeks. With how things ended for Bama in that game, I expect them to come out locked and loaded this year. Roll Tide.

10/19 @ Ole Miss- On paper it looks like a game where Mond could really cut loose. I’ll take A&M by a couple of touchdowns.

10/16 vs. Mississippi St.- Should be a fun one with Joe Moorhead implementing more of his offense for MSU. I could see this game going a couple of different ways but most of those end with A&M winning.

11/2 vs. UTSA- The Aggies should get a big, blowout win heading into their bye week.

11/16 vs. South Carolina- Two quarterbacks coming in looking to show out. This one could come down to which defense can do the most, which has me leaning Aggies.

11/23 @ Georgia- This is a grueling two game stretch to end the season. Much like Bama, this Georgia team is coming in with a chip on its shoulder with serious sights on the National Championship. I expect Jimbo to have A&M locked in, but I just can’t pick them to win against this UGA team.

11/30 @LSU- The rematch of the 74-72 Aggie win from last year will have a lot of eyes and possible stakes in Baton Rouge. The feeling is this LSU team could have a very special season, but it will have to finish out against Jimbo and co. Give me the Tigers in a “no way it’s as crazy as last year” kind of game.

Prediction

There is plenty of talent on this roster to put together a double digit win regular season. They just find themselves with an absolutely dreadful schedule. A&M is gonna end up playing four of the best teams in the country this year including #1 and #2. It’s completely bonkers, but hey – if Jimbo wins just one of those, it should be nine wins in the regular season with a possible bowl victory getting him number ten.
