Movie Review Rewind: Obsessed (2009)

Obsessed has a very familiar plot: a successful man that has the perfect family, with a sexy woman at work who wants to ruin it all. The movie is predictable and follows the same path as all the other movies that are like it. But there is a reward towards the end of the movie.

Derek Charles (Idris Elba) is a successful business man who has worked hard to get to the level he is at. His wife Sharon (Beyoncé Knowles) stays at home with their new baby boy. They seem to have it all. Everything seems to be going perfect. Too perfect.

Things begin to change once Lisa (Ali Larter), the sexy new temp, arrives. She gets what she believes in her head as signals from Derek that they should be together. Almost everything is made up in Lisa’s head. Basically, she is crazy. Sexy, but just plain crazy. She tries to have sex with Derek in a bathroom, she drugs him, and almost costs him his job and his family. But when Lisa goes to Derek and Sharon’s house when they aren’t home, and she sits and holds their son, it is the final straw.

Everyone knows that finally the two women will meet and settle their differences. They only meet once before their final showdown. Most of the action happens between Lisa and Derek. Sharon is on the outside looking in for most of the movie. But the reward the audience receives is the fight between Sharon and Lisa.

This is no fight involving scratching and pulling hair. There are punches, kicks, and use of weapons. This is no doubt the most entertaining and exciting part of director Steve Shill‘s movie. The rest is plain and borderline boring because of its common story. But the movie rises a little bit when the two women go at it. It doesn’t save the movie, but it helps.
